Notes: Cashman remains active
As trade deadline nears, GM in constant contact with Torre

NEW YORK -- With less than 48 hours until the trade deadline, Joe Torre knows
that the team with which he is currently going to battle could very well be
the one that he takes into the final two months of the season.

交易大限將在四十八小時之內結束， 洋基總教頭 Joe Torre了解他非常有可能率領現在

General manager Brian Cashman continues to work the phones, but the market
remains a tough one. There are some big-name sluggers out there (with hefty
price tags to match their salaries), but the pitching market is slim, making
it difficult for the Yankees to find many sensible matches.

Milwaukee's trade of Carlos Lee to Texas may have set the stage for players
such as Alfonso Soriano and Bobby Abreu to move over the weekend, but it
appears doubtful that New York would be in the mix for either of them, as
Washington and Philadelphia are asking for blue chip prospects such as Philip
Hughes.

Torre said of the ongoing rumor mill. "It wouldn't surprise me if nothing

Torre and Cashman speak "a minimum of six or eight times" each day, as the GM
has kept his manager in the loop with all trade discussions. Even as his team
tries to fill holes left by injuries in the outfield and searches for a
consistent fifth starter, Torre feels comfortable with the team he has right
now.

 That was scary."

consistency in the first three spots in the rotation, Torre believes that his
team has the necessary pieces to get the job done as it is currently
constructed.

"I feel pretty good about our starting rotation," Torre said. "There are a lot

What up, doc? Hideki Matsui will have his injured left wrist examined in New
York on Thursday, at which time he could be cleared to begin taking batting
practice.

"My periodic checkup that I have every two weeks is Thursday," Matsui said
through an interpreter after working out in Tampa. "August 3 is when I go to

After a scheduled off-day on Friday, Matsui continued hitting off a tee and
making soft throws Saturday. He also worked out in the outfield.

Matsui has experienced some soreness in his shoulders, but he doesn't believe
it is a concern.

shoulders are not sore anymore. It's fine."

Cano improving: Robinson Cano (strained left hamstring) ran the bases for a
second straight day Saturday, though he has not yet done so at full speed. He
experienced no problems, which was good news for Torre.

"He's never been to this point before, because he's never run the bases without

Torre estimated that Cano was running at 50-60 percent, and he will increase
that number in the coming days. Cano could be in rehab games sometime next
week.

Coming up: The Yankees and Devil Rays close out their three-game series on
Sunday, as Mike Mussina takes on James Shields. First pitch is scheduled for
