Cashman's only move

For the moment, as the Yankees push hard to acquire Bobby Abreu, I'm willing
to trust that GM Brian Cashman has a plan that will unfold over the next day
or so, because just about everything he has said and done since acquiring
more power last winter has made sense.

Surely there has to be more in the works, if indeed the Yankees are willing
to give up reliever Scott Proctor while taking on Abreu's contract. At this
point, laughable as it may sound, Proctor may be more valuable to this team
than Abreu would be.

The Yankees need pitching more than they need offense. They need relief help,
especially since Octavio Dotel is suddenly no sure thing to join the bullpen
at all this season, after a couple of setbacks in his rehab from Tommy John
surgery.

And they need starting pitching, at least partly because Randy Johnson seems
prone to meltdowns every handful of starts, the latest being his
batting-practice stint in yesterday's 19-6 debacle at the hands of the Devil
Rays.

Abreu would be a nice addition offensively, and I can't fault Cashman for
going after him, as long as the Yankees wind up with pitching as well. If
it's Roberto Hernandez from the Pirates to pitch some late innings in relief,
that's fine. Hernandez is still a decent setup man, with a 90-plus mph
fastball and a big heart.

during his year with the Yankees that he can win in the American League when
his sinker behaves, and, since he did some of his best pitching in the
playoffs that year, he doesn't scare.

he'll be a difference-maker in the Yankees' quest to make the playoffs over
the next couple of months. But I can't fault Cashman for chasing him, as long
it's not at the expense of pitching.

Actually, it wasn't so long ago that losing in such embarrassing fashion to
the Devil Rays, two days before the trading deadline, would have pushed

the Yankees' future.

still a member of the Trenton Thunder, no matter what the Yankees do about
Abreu.

There can be no denying that Zito could be a difference-maker for the Yankees
this season, or that Beane, the A's GM, happily would tie a ribbon around the
deal if he could get Hughes for the former Cy Young winner.

"He'd make that deal in a minute," an AL executive said yesterday. "Hughes
isn't a product of Yankee hype. Everybody thinks he's the real thing. At the

get to the playoffs again."

Whatever the pros and cons, Cashman has been insisting for two years that he
won't make those kinds of deals, giving up the future for the present. And so
far there is no reason to doubt his vow to hang onto Hughes.

目前也沒什麼理由質疑他堅持不放掉Hughes

Yesterday will surely test him, however, as one last reminder before the
deadline that Johnson can't be counted on consistently to be the Big Unit
anymore.

Indeed, just as Chien-Ming Wang was offering reason to argue the Yankees had
a Big Three of starting pitchers to match up with just about any team in
baseball, Johnson offered a reason to scoff at such an argument.


Johnson had strung together four straight solid starts before blowing up
yesterday, and he has had only three real stinkers in his last 10, but is
that good news or bad news? At this point you'd have to give Wang the ball
ahead of Johnson in a big game, wouldn't you?

Though he's been better lately, Johnson has allowed five or more runs in nine
of his 23 starts this season. Basically you never know when a meltdown is
coming, and with the problems the Yankees have at the back end of their
rotation, it means they may not have enough pitching to survive what figures
to be a bear of a pennant race.

If they get Abreu, fine. As long as there's more to the plan.
