Abreu has a series to remember Yankees right-fielder fitting in nicely with new teammates from mlb.com BOSTON -- Don't blame Bobby Abreu if he misses Boston. After all, Fenway Park agreed quite nicely with the Yankees right fielder for the last four days. Acquired along with Monday's winning pitcher Cory Lidle from the Phillies before the July 31 trade deadline, Abreu capped off a five-game series to remember by driving in the first run against a tenacious David Wells on Monday, helping the Yankees to a 2-1 win and a five-game series sweep over the Red Sox. After the game, his new skipper Joe Torre made it a point to thank his new slugger for his contribution. "You go out there and you tell everybody how proud you are of them and with Bobby, I just told him we couldn't be happier to have him here," Torre said. "He's a professional and a great role model for both Melky [Cabrera] and Robby [Cano] and he loves the responsibility." "He told me to keep going and keep playing hard and nice game," Abreu said. "It means a lot to me because it means he's happy to have me here and he believes in me and believes I can do a good job over here. It made me feel good and made me keep going and go for it every time." Torre said he had no worries coming into the series about Abreu's ability to handle his first taste of the rivalry with the Red Sox. "I really didn't worry about it," Torre said. "He slipped in here as easy as anybody has ever had and with Johnny Damon, I didn't have a concern when he came over here either because he's been involved in this for a long time ... but just the type of player Bobby is, and what I got to know about him from Larry Bowa, I felt pretty good about him." And in the seventh inning, Abreu rewarded Torre's faith. At the plate with two outs and Melky Cabrera on second in a scoreless game, Abreu drove a Wells pitch to the left-center field gap to score Cabrera and give the Yankees the lead. "I was just trying to put the ball in play," Abreu said of his at-bat. "He was throwing the ball pretty good today. He had good location and was throwing balls inside and outside and he was tough so I was trying to put the ball in play. Make contact and anything can happen." Abreu finished 10-for-20 with seven walks, four doubles, three RBIs and five runs scored in the five-game set. "He really hasn't been doing that good for us," captain Derek Jeter joked. "He's been doing everything. He's been drawing walks, hitting the ball well. He's playing great defense and stealing bases. We didn't play against him much [against Philadelphia] but just watching him, he's just continued to do what he's done over the last few years." Mike Petraglia is a contributor to MLB.com.
