Matsui's going to bat for Torre

Hideki Matsui has spent the last week in his Manhattan apartment, waiting
like everyone else for Joe Torre to speak publicly for the first time since
the Yankees were eliminated from the postseason Monday.
Matsui, however, has a vested interest in what Torre says.
The leftfielder told the Japanese publication Sankei Sports last week that
Torre's future with the Yankees will play a role in whether he decides to
re-sign with the club or head elsewhere.
"I want Joe to stay as Yankees manager," Matsui said. "I respect him not
only as the manager but also as a human being. I feel very comfortable
playing baseball under Joe.
"Yes, it will be one of the factors when I think about my new contract,"
Matsui added. "Of course, it is important who the manager is."
After a week of silence, Torre is expected to hold his year-end news
conference this week, and he has said he will address his rocky relationship
with George Steinbrenner.
Torre is due $13.1 million over the next two years, making it highly
unlikely that either the Yankees fire him or he chooses to walk away.
But it's clear that Matsui is looking for stability at the top before he
decides what he wants to do.
The Yankees, meanwhile, have decided they will start the negotiations by
offering Matsui $31.5 million over three years, which also was first
reported by Sankei Sports.
But Matsui, who is coming off a three-year, $21-million deal, is believed
to want a deal similar to the five-year, $55-million contract the Dodgers
gave J.D. Drew last year.
Matsui is expected to be at the Stadium this week to clean out his locker.
He's batted .297 and averaged 23 homers and 110 RBIs in his three years
with the Yankees.
