Manhattan meetings get under way

NEW YORK -- The Yankees' organizational meetings got under way in Manhattan
on Tuesday, as several front-office officials from both New York and Tampa
gathered to discuss the team's winter plans.

Among the topics of conversation, according to one source with knowledge of
the meeting, were signing Hideki Matsui to a new contract, completing the
coaching staff and how to fill the open spots in the bullpen.

General manager Brian Cashman refused to comment on any specific details of
the meeting.

the first of many meetings throughout the winter with the hope of trying to
put the best team on the field in 2006 and beyond."

Matsui figures to be the first order of business for the Yankees, as the club
must sign the left fielder by Nov. 15. If Matsui doesn't re-sign by that
date, the Yankees will be forced to release him and won't be able to discuss
a contract with him again until May, essentially ending his tenure in
pinstripes.

Matsui just completed a three-year, $21 million contract, averaging a .297

Yankees would like to sign him for another three years at $10 million to $11
million per season, but he is believed to be seeking a four-year deal worth
between $42 million and $46 million.

Also on Tuesday, the Yankees officially introduced Larry Bowa as the new

coach job and a managerial job in the Minors, likely at Class A Tampa.
