First Matsui, then center and the bullpen
Cashman has less than a week to keep left fielder in pinstripes

NEW YORK -- The Yankees have made it clear that finding a new center fielder
and bolstering their bullpen are the two biggest needs this offseason, but
general manager Brian Cashman has a more pressing issue as the free agent
signing period gets under way this week.
New York's GM has less than a week to get Hideki Matsui signed to a new
contract, or the Japanese slugger will be driving in runs elsewhere in 2006
and beyond.

But once that Nov. 15 exclusive negotiating deadline has passed -- presumably
with Matsui still in pinstripes -- Cashman will turn his focus on his two
biggest focal points.

"Center field and the bullpen are obviously the biggest areas that we need to
address," Cashman said. "They are the priorities. Everything else seems to be

Center field will be a tricky slot for the Yankees to fill, as the free agent
market is thin, with Johnny Damon and Preston Wilson the two most prominent
names. A trade is a possibility, though the prices for Torii Hunter, Juan
Pierre or Milton Bradley may be more than the Yankees are willing to pay.

That's because Cashman isn't interested in dealing the young talent on his
roster, particularly Chien-Ming Wang and Robinson Cano. Cashman opted to hold
on to the pair last summer at the trading deadline, and he plans to approach
the winter with the same frame of mind.

"That's still my goal. My recommendations are not to make any moves," he
said. "But if somebody offered me Albert Pujols for one of these guys, you'd
have to say that's a no-brainer. I want to protect the system, but we have to
be smart about it, too. If you're offered a home run, you have to take it."

But is Hunter, Pierre or Bradley that home run? Hunter figures to be the
toughest to acquire, as the Twins will likely want Cano in any trade. Florida
may be willing to deal Pierre for a lower price, and Los Angeles could have
several suitors for Bradley.

As for the bullpen, B.J. Ryan appears to be the team's top target, though the
Yankees will have to convince the left-hander to return to a setup role after
serving as closer for the Orioles last season.

Other available relief pitchers are Kyle Farnsworth, Scott Eyre, Ricardo

One thing Cashman knows is that he doesn't want to increase the payroll --
which topped $200 million in 2005 -- but rather to decrease it.

"We're looking to pare the payroll if possible," he said. "That would be
ideal."

Karsay, just to name a few -- from the books.

The other thing that the Yankees know as the hot stove season gets under way

pitchers on the market. That's because the team will see seven starters
return next spring, giving them options in the rotation.

"Hopefully, we have the right starters here. I know they're capable of it,"
Cashman said. "We never saw the real Carl Pavano because of injuries, and I
think Chien-Ming Wang is the real deal. Randy Johnson should also be better
with a year in New York under his belt. But you don't play the game on paper,
so we'll have to see."
