INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The Yankees opened negotiations with Hideki Matsui on
Wednesday night as general manager Brian Cashman and agent Arn Tellem broke
bread for three hours at a local steak joint.
No proposals were exchanged, but both men acknowledged that the clock is
ticking. By stipulation in Matsui's just expired three-year, $21 million
contract, the Yankees have until next Tuesday to sign the Japanese star or
they lose that right until May 15.

steps of the resort hotel where the general managers meetings are taking
place this week.

"I may be moving into his house," Tellem added. "We have the same pajama
size."

"Have patience with us," Cashman said. "Just give us until (next Tuesday). We
know we're racing against the clock, but give us a chance to come up with
something that makes sense for everybody."

Two things are abundantly clear: Matsui's preference is to return to the
Yankees, but for a lot more money. After nine years playing in Japan for the
Yomiuri Giants, Matsui signed with the Yankees prior to the 2003 season,
making it clear at the time that New York and Yankee Stadium was his only
choice.

Little has changed, Matsui told Japan's Sankei Sports newspaper on Wednesday.

"請大家跟我們耐心等待," Cashman說道. "到下週二前請給我們些時間. 我們

"Absolutely, staying with the Yankees is my top priority," he said. "I wish
it would happen, but I want to feel that the Yankees really need me. I want
to be respected. If I feel the Yankees do not need me anymore, I am ready [to
talk to another team]."

Cashman said the Yankees certainly want to retain Matsui, who has mostly
played left field in the Bronx and appeared in all 487 regular-season games
for the team, hitting .297 with 70 homers and 330 runs batted in.

"I know Hideki would love to stay here, that's his preference," Cashman said.
"We'd love to keep him. That's our preference. He's got a great agent and
we're going to try to find some common ground."

And Tellem noted that there are ways of getting around the deadline.

"We could both agree to extend it or the Yankees could outright Hideki,"
Tellem said. "We could refuse it and then he could become a free agent with
the ability to talk to the Yankees and other teams. Of course, the Yankees
would have to agree to that, but the first priority is to get a deal done
before the deadline."

Both parties said the dinner meeting was used to determine parameters for a
broader deal. Free agent contracts signed recently by other Major League
outfielders were outlined for comparison. Although Matsui is 31, he has only
played three years in the Major Leagues and doesn't meet the six-year
requirement to file for free agency.

Under normal circumstance, Matsui would be arbitration eligible, but the
original contract was structured to give him a lot more flexibility.

Matsui said he's comfortable enough now to play in another U.S. city with the
only stipulation being that he won't sign with a team that has an artificial
turf field in its stadium.

Still there is unfinished business in New York. The Yankees have made the
playoffs the last three seasons, but have only ascended to the World Series
once, losing to the Marlins in 2003 at the end of Matsui's first season.

But Cashman said he won't give daily briefings about progress in the talks or
disclose offers that are on the table.

"I'm not going to compromise it by saying I'm optimistic or announcing that
we're close," Cashman said. "That starts to get emotions involved and adds
other pieces to the mix. At end of the day, give us until next week and by
then hopefully Arn and I can work through all the issues that will satisfy
the Yankees and Hideki."

但 Cashman 說他不會每天在例行談話中對交易進度做報告, 或是揭露在談判桌上

"我不打算告訴大家說 我很樂觀或是宣布說我們一切都快搞定了之類的話," Cashman
