NEW YORK -- What looked like a routine play in left field turned out to be a
damaging blow for the Yankees, who will be without Hideki Matsui for the next
three months -- and possibly the remainder of the 2006 season.

"We don't know how long he's going to be gone, but it's a minimum of two
months," said Johnny Damon. "It could be four, five -- it could go into the
offseason. That's a tough loss. It's going to be different looking over my
right shoulder and he's not there."

Manager Joe Torre's guess is that Hideki Matsui will miss three months with a
broken left wrist.

That's a bad one. According to Johnny Damon, but the time Matsui was taken to
the ambulance to go to the hospital, his left wrist was twice the size of his
right. Unless the Yankees get some good news regarding the injury, they
probably will be in the market for an outfielder. Torii Hunter, Craig Wilson
and Jeff Conine are among the players they could pursue.
