Notes: Matsui close to returning Left fielder continues to rehab, while Rivera rests again By Jon Lane / YESNetwork.com http://www.yesnetwork.com/images/2006/09/01/mXeCJc7P.jpg
Matsui has been out of the Yankee lineup since May. (AP) Advertisement NEW YORK — Hideki Matsui took batting practice on the field for the first time since breaking his wrist on May 11. He sprayed line drives and fouled off a handful of pitches before stroking a home run to right field, one of three he hit during the session. "Not too bad," Matsui said. "The first couple I was focusing on hitting the other way. The latter half I was just reacting to the pitch. If I wanted to play now I think I could play. It's a matter of the club telling me when." The plan is for Matsui to continue taking BP and wait for clearance to begin a rehab assignment, probably for Double-A Trenton during the Thunder's playoff run. Joe Torre deemed those chances 50-50 and said he'll decide the next step by the time the Yankees go on the road next week. SAFE WITH MO Mariano Rivera's pitching arm felt sore one day after earning his 33rd save. Alarms went off around the Yankees when the veteran closer underwent an MRI Thursday, which showed only a mild muscle strain at the elbow, but no structural damage. Rivera was not available Friday and did not throw, but said he'd be ready on Saturday and hopes the planned rest will keep him ready for October. In the interim, Rivera will continue his treatment and will not receive a cortisone shot, which was not part of the discussion. "With the treatment and everything, hopefully everything will be fine," Rivera said. "If it doesn't go the way it's supposed to go, I have to rest a little more." Torre would like to avoid using Rivera three days in a row - and working more than an inning - for the rest of the season, and is even contemplating not using him the next couple of days. "You just take as good a care of him and give him more rest than you would under normal conditions," Torre said. "He's too important for us to take a chance with, so let's just take the warning of the irritation that's there and behave accordingly." Kyle Farnsworth was the closer Friday. GIAMBI TAKES A SHOT Jason Giambi reportedly received a cortisone shot to alleviate pain in his left wrist following Thursday's game. Hoping the shot would prevent him from missing any time, Giambi was in Friday's lineup as the designated hitter. An MRI on the wrist given between games of Wednesday's doubleheader revealed only inflammation. Neither Torre nor Brian Cashman knew if Giambi did in fact receive a shot, and Giambi was unavailable for comment Friday afternoon. QUICK HITS Derek Jeter had three hits and is batting .342, eight behind Minnesota's Joe Mauer for the AL lead. While Mauer's fourth-inning single snapped an 0-for-16 skid, Jeter is 8-for-15 (.533) on the current homestand and is riding a 12-game hitting streak, one short of his season high...The Yankees added catcher Wil Nieves, and right-handers T.J. Beam and Jose Veras to their expanded roster Friday. Outfielder Mitch Jones was designated for assignment..."It'll definitely give us a little more length where we won't have to worry about using people we don't want to use in games that they should be saved," Torre said of his bullpen additions. "We're confident that they'll do more than suck up innings. They can get outs too."...Tanyon Sturtze (right rotator cuff surgery) was in the clubhouse to clean out his locker...Twins right-hander Brad Radke has a stress fracture in the glenoid of his right shoulder, something not found in an MRI taken three weeks ago. Twins team physician Dr. Dan Buss said it's a rare condition and ordered Radke to not throw for two-to-three weeks. Buss added there is a chance Radke can pitch before the end of the season. http://www.yesnetwork.com -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 60.244.42.168
