Back spasms sideline veteran, rookie to take his place

NEW YORK -- Kevin Brown is headed to the disabled list, paving the way
 for rookie left-hander Sean Henn to make his second Major League start
 on Monday. Henn, who allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings on May 4 against
 the Devil Rays at Tropicana Field in his Major League debut, will get
another crack at Tampa Bay on Monday night in the Bronx.

"I like him overall," said manager Joe Torre. "He didn't have a good outing,
 but it's all about throwing strikes. His stuff is good."

Brown, who left his start on Wednesday with back spasms, showed some
improvement on Saturday, but after Torre and Brown met with general
manager Brian Cashman and pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, the decision
 was made to place him on the DL, retroactive to Thursday.

"Brownie is feeling better, but we decided to take it slow," Torre said after
 Saturday's game. "We're all on the same page; This guy is a big part of what
 we do, and we want to make sure that we didn't rush him."

Since making his start against the Rays, Henn is 4-2 with a 3.19 ERA in
eight games for Triple-A Columbus. He worked out in Columbus on Saturday
 and was scheduled to fly into New York that night, giving him a day to
settle in before taking the mound.

"We want to get Henn here so he doesn't have to pitch the minute he gets
 here," Torre said. "I like his presence. He's a little sneaky, and he's
 left-handed, which is certainly an advantage. I think he's a big league
 pitcher."
