Wilson wallops 1 for Wang BY ROGER RUBIN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Craig Wilson connects for home run in fifth inning, his third as a Yankee. By the fifth inning of the opener of yesterday's doubleheader at the Stadium, the Yankees seemed to be headed for a long day. They had left two men in scoring position in the third and fourth, and Detroit lefty Nate Robertson was making the big pitch every time the Tigers needed it. Craig Wilson put an end to that. The Bombers' first baseman unloaded on Robertson's second pitch of the fifth and drove it into the left-field stands to break a scoreless tie. Wilson didn't even need to follow the path of the ball. "It was nice to hit the ball hard," he said. "I was thinking we had the lead, which is great. "The way (Chien-Ming) Wang pitched, that was pretty much all we needed. I'm hoping that's not (all we score), but ...he was pitching great." "We had so many opportunities to do something," Joe Torre said. "Robertson's very, very tough." In the third inning of the Yankees' 2-0 victory, Johnny Damon's one-out double put runners at second and third, but Robertson struck out Derek Jeter and got Bobby Abreu to ground out. The following inning, Robinson Cano's two-out double put two more Yanks in scoring position. But Robertson got Melky Cabrera to fly out to end the inning. "He's a gamer where, when he gets men in scoring position, he knows how to pitch," Torre said of Robertson. "He struck Jeter out knowing that he had first base open. He made quality pitches all the time in key situations. It's never a good sign when you leave so many men in scoring position." Wilson made for an unlikely hero in the first game. He hit only .192 during the 11-game road trip that concluded Sunday, lowering his average to .247 since coming to the Bombers from Pittsburgh in the July31 Shawn Chacon trade. In the final game against the Angels, he struck out four times. Torre dropped him to ninth in the batting order, the first time he had hit ninth this season. Even he couldn't remember the last time he'd had a big hit like yesterday's. "I don't know how long it's been," said Wilson, who was at .244 after going 0-for-2 in the second game. "I really don't pay attention." It had been 39 at-bats since he'd hit a home run. "I think it was a changeup and he left it down the middle," Wilson said. And just what the Yanks needed.
