NEW YORK -- For Yankees manager Joe Torre, Bernie Williams is like a
favorite old coat that he might wear every day of the winter no matter
what the weather conditions or the occasion.

And that's fine with Williams, the veteran outfielder who has been a
Yankee his entire career, as well as for all of the 10-plus seasons
that Torre has managed the team.

Williams got a rest from starting duties when the Yankees hosted the
Oakland A's at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, but the veteran was still

Williams, as he has done for years, checks in with Torre early on a
daily basis in order to get his marching orders. While most players
wait until the manager posts a lineup to find out what they are doing,
Torre is comfortable having Williams come into his office and ask.

Williams said his preparation is different when he starts. Since Kevin
Thompson got the start in right field on Saturday, Williams was able
to kick back and relax until the midway point of the game before
getting his thoughts together about the pitchers he might have to
face.

"The great part of what Bernie has done this year is that he has

Triple-A in time to make his Major League debut at Yankee Stadium on
Friday night, had three hits. His first as a big leaguer was off
