Patience pays off for Yanks in Game 2 Cabrera, Jeter wait out Timlin, deliver key hits in seventh By Mike Petraglia / Special to MLB.com BOSTON -- The Yankees gave new meaning to patience on Friday night. Three hours after winning a game that took three hours and 55 minutes, the Yanks waited out a tired Red Sox bullpen, scoring seven runs in the seventh to slug their way to a 14-11 victory at Fenway Park on Friday night in the longest nine-inning game in Major League history. In the seventh inning alone, the Yankees faced 53 pitches, with Melky Cabrera and Derek Jeter leading the way. Cabrera battled Red Sox reliever Mike Timlin for nine pitches before driving in the first of the inning's seven runs with a sharp single to right, cutting Boston's lead to 10-8. "He seems to have a calm about him and he's having fun playing the game," Yankees manager Joe Torre said after the four-hour, 45-minute marathon. And he's certainly been a lifesaver for us, no question." "Melky had a great at-bat," added hitting coach Don Mattingly. "Timlin is tough, and he fouled off a couple of pitches and then took something down and fouled it off his foot. He's been amazing for us." But that was only the preliminary contest for the heavyweight bout between Timlin and Jeter. Jeter, who was 3-for-20 against the veteran right-hander, fouled off three pitches and worked a full count before going with a Timlin pitch on the outside corner and lining it down the right-field line for a go-ahead three-run double. "I don't even remember what it was," Jeter said. "I think it was a cutter away. I haven't had much success against Timlin. He's as tough on me as anyone, so it got to a good count and I had a good pitch to hit." Torre sat in the dugout and watched as Jeter struck out in his first two at-bats and then grounded out in his next two. "First couple of times he struck out on high fastballs, but when he gets there in that situation, he's tough to beat," Torre said. And together, Cabrera and Jeter proved on Friday night that, indeed, some things are worth the wait. -- 「眼淚的存在,是為了證明悲傷不是一場幻覺。」 ~羅蘭巴特《戀人絮語》 羅蘭巴特提出理論,而我證實。 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.121.140.121
