Joe counts back from 11
Seeks fitting end to second decade
JUPITER, Fla. - Joe Torre sits in the visiting manager's office at Roger
Dean Stadium, his brother Frank across the desk from him, another spring
training morning beginning here, way down at the end of the left-field line,
across the state of Florida from Legends Field. Both Joe and Frank Torre are
old Milwaukee Braves, and on this morning Joe is talking about Warren Spahn,
and what it was like to catch Spahn, and how at dinner the night before, at
a place down the road called Carmine's, 86-year-old Stan Musial had reminded
Joe Torre that he used to hit Spahn pretty good.
他老哥Frank(謝樓下uranusjr指點)坐在對面
"I remember," Joe Torre told Musial.
And now at Roger Dean Stadium, he tells about how Spahn dropped down one day
and tried to sidearm Musial, thinking maybe he could fool him that way. Torre
said that usually when a lefthanded pitcher did that with a lefthanded
hitter, you saw the hitter flinch a little. Not Musial. Torre said he saw the
great Musial set his shoulder. Dig in even more.
Musial
"When you see that as a catcher, all you think is, 'Oh ---,'" Torre said.
Musial hit a line drive that hit Spahn right where he would have been wearing
a cup if he had been wearing one that day, and down went a pitcher who would
eventually win 363 games in the big leagues. But he reached over on the
ground, picked up the ball, threw out Musial at first base.
Musial
"Musial ran past us on his way back to the dugout," Joe Torre says. "He
slowed down long enough to say, 'You okay, old man?' and just kept running."
He laughs, so does his brother, so does everybody in the room, at this story
out of Joe Torre's other baseball life, one that goes back to names like
Spahn and Musial. It is the baseball life he had before he became the manager
who made the Yankees what they were when both he and his brother were
Brooklyn kids in the '40s and '50s. Before he became the most famous manager
in Yankee history, the most popular and, even without as many World Series as
others before him had, perhaps even the best.
"I always understood the requirements of the (Yankee) uniform," he says in
Jupiter on this morning. "From the very first day."
Only the requirements weren't the same when he first put on the uniform. The
Yankees weren't the Yankees. They were nearly 20 years away from their last
world championship. When they had made the playoffs - as a wild-card team -
in 1995, it was their first playoff appearance in 14 years. Then Torre's
Yankees won it all in '96. Before long, Torre's Yankees had won four World
Series in five years. So he came here and changed the requirements, along
with Jeter and Rivera and Bernie and Posada, a remarkable core that still
holds to this day, even if Bernie Williams is no longer the Yankee starter in
center field.
It is why, over his first 10 years in a Yankee uniform, he has been the
single most significant top-manager in all of professional sports, one of the
most significant in all of sports history, even if you think he should have
won even more than he has, because of all the money spent on players, all the
talent he has had in the room.
Now he begins his second decade as Yankee manager. He won those four World
Series in the first five years, none in the next five years. Act 1 and Act 2.
Now comes Act 3, his final act as Yankee manager whether it is for one year,
or two, or more. He knows the requirements this season, his 11th season with
the Yankees, better than any Yankee fan alive, better than the Yankee owner,
better than anybody. George Steinbrenner has spent a billion dollars in salary
and taxes the last five years and hasn't won.
Torre's Yankees are supposed to win again.
Or else.
