Or else Lou Piniella, or somebody else, could be the manager next season,
despite the current lovefest between Torre and Steinbrenner. In that way, the
stakes are as high for Torre as they have ever been. He is not just here for
the money. Not a baseball lifer like this. Torre does not ever say this, but
he cannot want to be Pat Riley, who hasn't won an NBA title since he left the
Lakers. He does not want to be Don Shula, who won two Super Bowls in the '70s
and then never won again with the Dolphins. Or Bill Parcells, still chasing
the third Super Bowl he has been chasing since coaching the Giants.

He is asked on this morning in Jupiter if there has ever been a spring
training since the last World Series win for his Yankees, against the Mets,
when he did not show up at Legends Field thinking his team could win.

"The pennant?" Torre says. He nods. "Sure. You always look at the talent in
the room and the capabilities of the people."

Torre smiles. More than anyone in the organization, maybe even Brian Cashman,
the smart general manager, he has always brought an uncommon perspective to
the job. So he does not give you a silly Steinbrenner quote about going for
it, or some such thing, something to put on the back page. We're going for
it!

Sheffield's, and a ball fell, and how the Yankees started to fall out of the
2005 season right there.
