Americans go back to work
BY ANTHONY McCARRON
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
SAN DIEGO - After the loss to Mexico that eliminated Team USA from the World
Baseball Classic on Thursday night, most of the Americans took a two-hour bus
ride from Anaheim to San Diego, part of the travel plan if they had made the
tournament's final round. From there, they were slated to scatter to their
respective spring training camps.
But their ouster still lingered among the tourney semifinalists, some of whom
were amazed they wouldn't be seeing the team that had such stars as Ken
Griffey Jr., Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter.
"We were surprised just like everybody," said Dominican shortstop Miguel
Tejada. "I think the whole world is surprised to see that USA lost. Everybody
knew they had a good team. . . . I think the whole world wants to see the USA
and the Dominican Republic the last two teams playing."
"The American team was full of MLB players, and we all thought they would be
the best in the tournament," added Japan's Nobuhiko Matsunaka.
But the Americans, despite their bulging muscles and power game, did not hit
well. They were just 5-for-40 with runners in scoring position in games that
did not include pushover South Africa, whom they mauled, 17-0, in the first
round. American players said they were in spring training mode, so their
swings weren't sharp.
Now they can only watch as Japan, Korea, the Dominican Republic and Cuba
compete for the inaugural title. Cuba and the Dominican play today at 3 p.m.
EST and Japan faces Korea at 10 p.m. Both games are at Petco Park, the
Padres' home.
While most American players praised the WBC throughout the tournament, both
Jeter and Rodriguez admitted after Thursday's loss that they were eager to
return to the Yankees.
"That's the only positive that comes from this (loss), you get to get back to
your team," Jeter said.
"We would have liked to have stayed three or four more days, but now we go
back to work," Rodriguez said. "And now people feel like the vacation is over
and now is the time for the real work."
Meanwhile, the Dominican and three teams not dominated by major leaguers will
vie for the title. Japan and Korea are playing for the third time in the
tournament - Korea has won both games and is undefeated overall at 6-0. Korea
also has not made an error.
