Yankees notes: 21 games in 20 days to test mettle

CHICAGO -- The Yankees tonight begin a stretch of 21 games in 20 days, without
 a day off. Of those 21 games, all but three are against teams in playoff
contention: the Chicago White Sox (three), Los Angeles Angels (seven), Boston
Red Sox (five in four days) and Seattle Mariners (three).

"We're about as ready for the challenge as we could ever be," manager Joe Torre
 said.

"We're going to keep plugging along," Jason Giambi said. "The nice part is we
have our own destiny in our own hands."

The Yankees have won 11 of their past 13 series and are 16-6 since the All-Star
 break -- including a 5-1 mark since adding Bobby Abreu, Cory Lidle and Craig
Wilson at the trade deadline.

"I don't remember a trade deadline where we improved our team as much as we did
this year," Torre said.

Assuming no setbacks in pregame drills, the Yankees are expected to activate
second baseman Robinson Cano from the disabled list before tonight's game and
put infielder Miguel Cairo (strained left hamstring) on the DL.

Gary Sheffield was examined yesterday by hand specialist Charles Melone,
general manager Brian Cashman said, but was not cleared to swing a bat.
Sheffield is recovering from surgery June 13 to repair damage to a ligament and
 a tendon in his left wrist.

Chien-Ming Wang's rate of 2.77 strikeouts per nine innings pitched is last
among the 90 pitchers in the majors who qualify for the ERA title. Yet despite
the lack of strikeouts, Wang -- scheduled to start tonight as the Yankees open
 a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox -- is 13-4.

With 48 strikeouts so far, Wang could become the first pitcher in 17 years to
win 15 games but finish with fewer than 75 strikeouts. Baltimore's Jeff Ballard
 and Minnesota's Allan Anderson last did it, in 1989.

Wang is 10th in the AL in ERA (3.58), tied for third in wins and sixth in
innings pitched (156).
