Defensive miscues, runners left on base culprits in loss

CHICAGO -- Although a .500 road trip isn't cause for celebration, the Yankees
head home after Thursday's loss to the White Sox in better shape than when they
left.
雖然五成勝率之旅不是拿來慶祝的理由，洋基在星期四對白襪輸球後返回主場，情勢仍然

Despite dropping a 5-4 decision to Chicago, New York returns home with a three-
game lead over Boston in the American League East, two games better than it was
 a week ago.

"We're three games up; a week ago, we weren't three games up," said Mike
Mussina, who lost his second consecutive start. "I think we're doing pretty
good. It would have been nice to win a couple of games here instead of just
one, but they're playing better than when we saw them back home. That's just
the way it is."

Thursday's loss came as a result of two costly errors that led to a four-run
second, as well as a 3-for-15 night with runners in scoring position for the
offense. The Yankees left 15 men on base, including nine in scoring position.

The Yankees dropped two of three this week, but won the season series with the

New York, which went 3-3 in its road trip, remains three ahead of Boston (four
in the loss column), as the Red Sox were swept by the Royals, completing a 1-5
road trip against last-place Tampa Bay and Kansas City.

After waiting out a one hour, 26-minute rain delay before the start of the
game, the Yankees had scoring opportunities in each of the first two frames, as
Johnny Damon and Robinson Cano led off each inning with a double. But New York
went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, the lone hit coming on Derek
Jeter's infield single.

Chicago took advantage of New York's sloppy defense in the second, scoring four
 runs against Mussina. The first error came with no outs and men on first and
second, as Joe Crede hit what looked like a routine double play ball to Alex
Rodriguez. A-Rod fired to second base, but the throw was wide of Cano, allowing
Jermaine Dye to score while putting runners on the corners.
白襪好好利用了洋基在第2局鬆散的守備，對Mussina連得4分。第1次失誤發生在一二壘
有人沒出局，Joe Crede打出一支看起來像是平凡無奇的雙殺球，但A-Rod傳給Cano時傳偏

Alex Cintron singled to left, scoring A.J. Pierzynski, but Melky Cabrera made
an error while trying to pick up the ball, allowing Crede to score from first
base on the play. Scott Podsednik added an RBI single to score Cintron, giving
the Sox a 4-0 lead.

Jason Giambi cut the lead in half in the second, drilling a two-run homer off
Vazquez, his 33rd of the season.

The Yankees loaded the bases in the fourth after Vazquez issued a pair of
two-out walks to Bobby Abreu and A-Rod, but Giambi was caught looking at strike
three to end the inning. New York had runners at the corners with one out in
the sixth, but Brandon McCarthy came in and retired A-Rod before striking out
Giambi, holding the two-run lead.

 though. You have to tip your cap, because they made their pitches."

Mussina thought he had Brian Anderson struck out on a 1-2 pitch to end the
sixth, but home plate umpire Bill Miller disagreed. Anderson laced a double on
the next pitch, then Scott Podsednik followed with an RBI single, boosting the
lead to 5-2.

"I thought I had him struck out," Mussina said. "But he didn't think it, and
that's the only one that counts."

Miller's strike zone bothered both teams, but the Yankees weren't using that as
 an excuse.

"It was the same for both sides," Torre said. "Both sides were unhappy."

Mussina left after the sixth, charged with five runs (three earned) on eight
hits and one walk, striking out six. His record dropped to 13-5, losing two in
a row for just the second time this season.

"Every loss is frustrating," Mussina said. "Some days, you don't throw that

The Yankees countered in the seventh, mounting a two-out surge of their own.
Craig Wilson doubled to right-center, setting up Cabrera's two-run homer to
right field. Cabrera has homered in two straight games and three of his last
four.

Matt Thornton went through the heart of the Yankees' lineup in the eighth,
retiring Abreu, A-Rod and Giambi in order. Bobby Jenks closed out the win with
a scoreless ninth, recording his 31st save.

"Tonight and the first night, we feel we should have won those games,"
Rodriguez said. "We didn't play our best baseball."

"It's not like the club that beat us is a piece of cake. These guys are pretty
darn good," Torre said. "Every game could have gone either way. We have a lot
