NEW YORK -- Not long after Joe Torre confirmed that Chien-Ming Wang would be
his No. 1 starter for the American League Division Series, the right-hander
went out and did what earned him that spot.
The 26-year-old from Taiwan allowed 10 hits and four runs in six innings and
matched Minnesota's Johan Santana for the major-league lead with his 19th
win. He became the first Asian-born pitcher to reach that mark, passing Chan
Ho Park, who went 18-10 in 2000.
"I was surprised," Wang said of the nod to be the No. 1 starter. "I never
thought of this."
Before the game, Torre announced his Game 2 and 3 starters would be, as
expected, Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson.
But the manager remained mum on his Game 4 starter.
"We're not sure yet, we're still talking about that," Torre said, adding "if
there is a Game 4."
Either Jaret Wright or Cory Lidle could be the No. 4 guy. Wright is 11-7 with
a 4.39 ERA; Lidle is 4-3 with a 5.08 ERA.
Torre said that the back problems that kept Johnson from his final scheduled
regular-season start tonight were the main reason he named the left-hander
the No. 3 starter.
In addition, this rotation favors the home and away records of the Yankees
pitchers, which could be key should the Yankees get home-field advantage
throughout the playoffs. They are one game ahead of Detroit for the major
leagues' best record at 96-62.
Wang was 10-3 with a 2.88 ERA at Yankee Stadium. The 26-year-old form Taiwan
is 15-5 at home in his career.
Mussina, the No. 2 starter, is 8-2 at home with a 3.30 ERA this season.
Johnson, who had back stiffness earlier this week, is 10-5 on the road but
7-6 at home.Torre said that another reason he put Johnson in the third spot
as opposed to the second was that he could use the No. 2 starter in relief in
Game 5, should the series go that long. Given Johnson's health, the
43-year-old would not be a viable option as a reliever in that
situation.Closer Mariano Rivera, pitching in his third game since missing
three weeks with a strained right forearm, tossed a scoreless seventh. He
threw 14 pitches -- 12 strikes -- and hit 95 mph, and said after the game
that he was ready for the playoffs.
Torre said Rivera will get one more outing before the playoffs, possibly on
Saturday.
"He was throwing the ball really well tonight," Torre said. The Yankees
surpassed the four million mark in attendance last night, reaching that mark
for the second consecutive season. They are the second team in ML history to
twice draw that many fans in a single season. The Toronto Blue Jays did it in
1991 and 1992.
The Yankees have drawn a total of 4,032,228 so far, and should surpass their
record of 4,090,692 in the season's final four games.Major League Baseball
announced that Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitching coach Mike Butcher has been
suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his actions
(arguing ball and strike calls) in the first inning of Monday's game, a 16-1
Yankees win. ... The Yankees held a meeting last night to vote on playoff
shares. ... Special assignment instructor Rob Thomson coached first base last
night in place of Tony Pena, who learned of his father's passing before the
game.
