YANK PEN PALS COME UP EMPTY
By GEORGE KING
August 9, 2006 -- CHICAGO - The fastball to Paul Konerko was supposed to
be away. Not go away.
Yet, the instant Konerko put wood on Mariano Rivera's heater in the ninth
inning Rivera knew he had flushed a win over the White Sox at U.S.
Cellular Field.
"Right away," Rivera said when asked when he knew Konerko had hit a
game-tying homer. "I knew."
Nobody in the sold-out ballpark believed it wasn't going over the wall
because it was crushed.
"It had too much of the plate; I wanted it away," Rivera said after the
White Sox copped a 6-5 victory in 11 innings that was witnessed by 39,872
on Jermaine Dye's game-winning single off Scott Proctor.
Watching Rivera blow his third save in 31 opportunities after converting
15 straight wasn't the way the Yankees envisioned starting a stretch where
they are playing 21 games in 20 days. Yet, the cut wasn't as deep as it
could have been because the Red Sox lost to the rancid Royals and remained
two games back in second place.
The loss may have been costly if Jason Giambi's bruised right elbow keeps
him out. Giambi was hit in the eighth with the based loaded to put the
Yankees ahead, 5-4, but wasn't able to hit in the 10th with two outs and
a runner on second. X-rays were negative and he said playing tonight depends
on how much the joint swells.
Rivera's flush job ruined three scoreless innings of relief from Ron Villone,
Jose Veras, Mike Myers and Kyle Farnsworth. It also rendered useless Alex
Rodriguez' two-run homer and Craig Wilson's solo blast. And Jorge Posada
throwing out three runners trying to steal second wasn't as sweet.
Robinson Cano's went 3-for-5 in his first game after coming off the DL, and
Jorge Posada went 3-for-3 throwing out would-be base stealers at second.
While Rivera gave life to the White Sox, who opened a one-game lead over
the Red Sox in the AL wild-card chase, Dye spanked a 0-2 pitch from
Proctor to center one pitch after A-Rod and Melky Cabrera couldn't
catch Dye's foul pop down the third base line.
"About 10 feet," said A-Rod, whose homer was No. 452 and tied him with
Carl Yastrzemski for 31st place on the all-time list. "I can't catch that
ball and I don't think Melky can."
Proctor, who fanned three in the 10th, watched Tadahito Iguchi open the
11th with a single off Cano's glove. Working carefully to Jim Thome,
Proctor walked him on a 3-2 pitch. Dye took a strike and then missed at
an 86-mph slider. After the foul pop, Proctor gave up the single but
didn't second-guess himself.
"It was down and you have to tip your hat," Proctor said. "It could have
been a little more off the plate at 0-2, but I can live with that."
So, too, can the Yankees live with staff ace Chien-Ming Wang's five-inning
subpar performance. He entered the game on an 18-inning scoreless streak
and stretched it to 19 with a scoreless first. However, he gave up three
runs in the second. In five frames he allowed four runs and seven hits.
"My pitches were too flat, I was opening up too quick," Wang said.
"It was a frustrating game, one we could have won three or four times,"
said A-Rod, who started the night in a 1-for-17 funk and went 3-for-3 with
two walks and 2 RBIs. "You take your chances with Mo."
