MO WILL THROW IN K.C.
By ANDREW MARCHAND
September 4, 2006 -- Although GM Brian Cashman chose to keep the exact
day top secret, Mariano Rivera will throw a bullpen session in Kansas City
to test if his three days off and counting have improved his strained muscle
below his elbow.
"I'm getting better," said Rivera, who also declined to reveal the exact
day he will throw.
With the Yankees seemingly destined for the playoffs, the biggest question
facing them right now is if Rivera will be fully healthy.
"He will throw when he feels good," Cashman said. "I know what the date is
right now, but I don't want to say publicly."

While Mike Mussina will return to the mound tomorrow, he doesn't know
if he will be a Yankee next year. The Yankees and Mussina have had no
contract discussions.
"Anytime they want to call, I'll listen," Mussina said. When asked if
the Yankees want Mussina back, Cashman said he will "evaluate everything
when the season ends," emphasizing this is the plan for all of the team's
free agents. As for Mussina's groin, he said it is fully healed and he
can't wait to take the mound tomorrow in Kansas City.
"Excited? Yeah," said Mussina, who has been on the DL for two weeks. "I've
been sitting a long time."

Kyle Farnsworth pitched an inning for the first time in a week. After
his scoreless ninth, Farnsworth said his back felt fine. Scott Proctor
pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. It was Proctor's first appearance
since he gave up the game-losing home run Wednesday.

The Yankees have altered Hideki Matsui's minor league rehabilitation
slightly. Instead of going to Trenton today, Matsui will work out in
Staten Island today and tomorrow. He will then head to Double-A Trenton
to play in his first game since he broke his wrist in the middle of May.
Joe Torre said that Matsui will begin at DH. "I don't think he needs
practice in the outfield," Torre said.

Derek Jeter played in his 1,647 game as the Yankee shortstop, which tied
Phil Rizzuto on the all-time team list. Rizzuto still owns something that
Jeter doesn't have yet - an AL MVP. Rizzuto won the award in 1950. At the
stadium these days, Jeter is being greeted with chants of MVP.
"It's not a goal I set," Jeter said. "You can't help but hear [the chants.]
You appreciate it.''
With his double, Jeter extended his hitting streak to a season-best
14 games.

In the eighth, Bobby Abreu fouled a ball off his lower shin. He stayed in
the game and nailed his third double. When Aaron Guiel pinch-ran for Abreu,
the crowd gave Abreu a standing ovation. It was the third time in his
career that Abreu had three doubles.
