[新聞] Yanks Overcome Rough Night by Rodriguez

It was the top of the eighth inning last night and the Yankees had the lead in
 a close game. Bubba Crosby trotted to right field as a defensive upgrade over
 Bernie Williams. That was a routine move.

昨晚八局上，洋基在比數接近的比賽取得領先， 由 Crosby接替了伯尼，這是個例行的

更換選手。

This move was unusual: Nick Green replaced Alex Rodriguez at third. It was not
 a reflection on Rodriguez’s defense, Manager Joe Torre said, but Rodriguez
had already suffered his worst-ever game in the field.

但接下來這個調度可不尋常了:由小綠來接替A-ROD三壘的守備，但這並不是對A-ROD的守備

有所懷疑，托瑞說A-ROD已經感覺到自己生涯最離譜的一次守備。

The Yankees overcame four errors, three by Rodriguez, to edge the Seattle
Mariners, 4-2, for their eighth victory in nine games. Rodriguez left early
because he fouled a ball off his left big toe in the fifth inning. He said he
would have X-rays today.

洋基仍然克服了四次失誤所帶來的影響，其中A-ROD包辦三次，這一次擊敗水手的勝利，

“You never want to come out of a game,” said Rodriguez, who iced the toe near
 the end of the game. “But it was swelling up pretty bad in my last at-bat.”

Rodriguez had never made three errors in a game, but fortunately for him, there
was a sinkerball pitcher on the mound. Chien-Ming Wang (10-4) worked seven
innings, using his heavy sinker to get 15 groundball outs.

A-ROD從沒單場三次失誤過，但幸運的是站在投手丘的是保齡球大師-王建民，主投七局，

“He bailed everybody out tonight,” Torre said.

Most of all, he bailed out Rodriguez, who went 0 for 4 and whose errors — all
 on throws — did not lead to any runs. Rodriguez has 16 errors over all, his
highest total in a season since 2001.

反觀全局，讓人傷腦筋的可是A-ROD了，4打數掛蛋跟那堆失誤，沒辦法造成任何得分，

他已經有16次的失誤了，也是他從2001年以來的最高紀錄了!!

“That’s baseball,” Rodriguez said. “The day before, I had a brilliant day
defensively. Tonight, I stunk. The good news is we won, and move on.”

"這就是棒球!!"Rodriguez說，"今天之前，我的防守都還不差吧，但我今天真是爛透了，

不過好消息是球隊最後贏了，而且持續下去。"

Three relievers finished up the victory, including closer Mariano Rivera, who
earned his third save in four days. Rivera got three outs in a row after
Seattle put runners on the corners to start the ninth inning.

最後靠三位救援投手穩住了勝利，包括守護神Mo，他在最近四天裡拿下三個救援點，九局

上雖然他讓水手的跑者站上三壘，但之後ㄧ連拿下三個出局數，畫下了完美的句點。

Rivera pitched two innings for his 400th save Sunday, but Torre said his pitch
count had been reasonable and he had no qualms using him again. But using him
tonight might be a stretch.

“That’s probably a coin flip right now,” Torre said.

The way the Yankees are playing, Rivera is needed often. The Yankees are a
half-game behind Boston in the American League East and are 4-0 since the
All-Star Game break.

“That’s what we’re supposed to do,” Johnny Damon said. “We’re a team
that’s put together to win every single year. Tonight we didn’t play well,

While Seattle’s offense could not capitalize on second chances, the Yankees
took advantage, turning a Richie Sexson error into three runs.

The Yankees trailed, 1-0, with two outs and no base runners in the second
inning. Andy Phillips punched a single to right, and Melky Cabrera followed
with smash that ate up Sexson near the first-base line.

洋基開賽先以0-1落後，在兩出局後飛利浦敲了支右外野的安打，而卡布跟著用ㄧ個強勁

ㄧ壘邊線的球，造成Sexson失誤。

The ball rolled away and Cabrera reached second on a two-base error. Miguel
Cairo then grounded a single to left, scoring Phillips easily. The third-base
coach, Larry Bowa, boldly waved Cabrera home to challenge Raul Ibanez’s arm.

隨著這顆球的滾動，卡布趁機上到了二壘，開羅又補上了一支左外野的安打，飛利浦先回

來得分，而三壘指導教練Bowa更是揮舞著手臂，叫卡布趕回本壘來挑戰外野手 Ibanez的

The throw bounced twice on the way to the plate and Cabrera slid in safely.
Damon then worked a nine-pitch at-bat, slapping a single to left to score Cairo
from second and give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

這個傳球驚了兩次彈跳才到達本壘，而卡布早已滑壘回家得分，隨後大門纏鬥了9顆球，

“Sometimes you just have to battle, and I had to do that,” said Damon, who
came into the game 1 for 19 against Seattle starter Jarrod Washburn and
finished it with three more hits. “I’m not feeling great at the plate, but I
happened to make things work tonight.”

Wang made the lead stand, despite Rodriguez’s errors in the fourth, fifth and
seventh innings. In the fourth, his wide throw allowed Adrian Beltre to reach
first base safely. On a fielder’s choice in the fifth, Rodriguez’s throw
pulled Cairo off second base. And in the seventh, he threw wildly to first to
allow Beltre to reach base.

王建民把領先穩穩維持著，儘管A-ROD有著三次失誤，在四局.五局.七局都各來一次。

第一次是傳的太偏，讓Beltre有機會上到一壘，第二次是野手間的選擇傳球又傳高了，

最後第七局是先在地上落了一下，再傳還是太慢。

But the last-place Mariners wasted each chance. In the fourth, Beltre was
erased on a double play. In the fifth, Beltre grounded out with the bases
loaded to end a scoreless inning. And in the seventh, Willie Bloomquist got
caught in a rundown after Beltre reached first on the error, ending the inning.

但最終水手都還是浪費了這些機會，第四局Beltre以一個雙殺被化解，五局Beltre又來個

滾地球出局，造成滿壘的機會卻無功而返。七局雖然Beltre雖然靠著失誤上壘，但隊友

Bloomquist卻跑過了頭被夾殺出局來收場。

“That’s the thing Wang does so great — you can make some mistakes behind him
 and he’ll get a double play,” Jason Giambi said. “He’s a ground-ball
pitcher, so he can constantly always work himself out of some situations.”

Giambi helped Wang in the fifth by launching a hanging slider into the third
deck in right for his 28th homer. Giambi is on pace for 50, which would be a
career high.

“I’m getting my pitch and not missing it, not fouling it back,” Giambi said. “
Some years I’ve gotten a lot of doubles, but this year it just seems when I
hit them and I put the good part of the bat on them, they’re going out of the
ballpark.”

Giambi has charged a surprisingly resourceful offense, considering injuries to
three everyday players. But the biggest reason for last night’s victory — and
most of them, of course — is pitching.

大吉令人驚喜的攻擊火力，再缺少了三名重要的先發球員外，看起來格外重要，而昨晚的

勝利，最大的功臣還是在他們的投手身上。


With Wang, Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson, the Yankees are the first team in
the majors to have three pitchers with 10 victories. Tonight they audition
another fifth starter, Sidney Ponson, and their confidence could not be much
greater.

有著小王，巨怪跟穆帥，洋基成為了聯盟第一支擁有三位10勝以上投手的球隊。今晚，他

們的第五號先發即將豋場，他們相信情況將是再樂觀不過了!!

“We’re giving everything we’ve got,” Torre said, “and with Sidney tomorrow
, I think he’s going into the best possible scenario.”
