BY ANTHONY RIEBER Newsday Staff Writer October 11, 2006 Now that the cloud over Joe Torre's head has been lifted, the one hovering over Alex Rodriguez is ready to take centerstage in Yankeeland. Should the Yankees try to get A-Rod to waive his no-trade clause? Can Torre repair his fractured relationship with his third baseman after humiliating him by batting him eighth in Saturday's season-ending playoff loss in Detroit? Can Rodriguez win over the fans in New York and be thought of as a clutch player like his former buddy, Derek Jeter? The last three days have been about Torre, Torre, Torre. Expect the next few months to be about A-Rod, A-Rod, A-Rod, despite everyone's denials that the Yankees and their star want to work hard to make their marriage work. Remember, Brad and Jen once made the same denials about their marriage. Now Brad is with Angelina Jolie and baby Shiloh somewhere in Africa and Jen is canoodling with Vince Vaughn. "You always reserve the right to change your mind over time with your opinions, but I fully expect to have him at third base next year for us," general manager Brian Cashman said yesterday at Yankee Stadium. "I know he's motivated like he's been in the past to get this job done." The job, of course, is winning the World Series, and the Yankees have not done that since 2000; Rodriguez waived his no-trade clause to come over from Texas before the 2004 season. After going 1-for-14 in the Yankees' embarrassing four-game loss to the Tigers in the ALDS, Rodriguez said he didn't want to leave unless the Yankees "are dying to get me out of here." Said Cashman, "He wants to stay here and while he is here - and I fully expect him to be here - we're going to figure this thing out together. Joe's responsibility, without a doubt, is to get the most out of this player along with everyone else." It's a measure of how far A-Rod's star has fallen that questions are still being asked about whether he can thrive in New York after three seasons in pinstripes, one of them an MVP year. A possible hint into Torre's thinking is that he's not sure, either. "I want to believe that [he can], yes," Torre said. "As far as I'm concerned, Alex Rodriguez is one of the important pieces to this puzzle here." Cashman said he has been getting inquiries about Rodriguez's availability from rival GMs since the slugger's struggles began in May and has always said, "No thanks." Since the Yankees were eliminated, he has already gotten one e-mail from a team executive suggesting a Rodriguez deal. "It was one of those, 'Great season, tough, and then, 'Hey, how about the following?'" Cashman said. "I wanted to respond, 'Buzzard.' " Cashman said he expects his counterparts to keep calling. Though it might seem the Yankees are the only team that could afford to pay Rodriguez's enormous salary, in fact the Rangers are committed to paying $44 million of the $108 million he is owed over the next four seasons. The Yankees - or the team that trades for him - will pay Rodriguez $16 million per season. Speculation about which teams would be interested in a deal for Rodriguez centers around the Angels, who have prospects to deal and an owner in Arte Moreno who wants to make a big splash; the Dodgers, who also have prospects to spare and need a big bat; and Rodriguez's hometown team, the Marlins, who would have to get significant money back from the Yankees to fit A-Rod into their tiny payroll. Or maybe the Yankees really will keep him and Rodriguez will flourish. Cashman was asked if A-Rod can be the player the Yankees want him to be with Torre at the helm. "He better be," Cashman said. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 59.112.86.77
