The night was damp, the Yankees' opponent was doleful, the holiday getaway traf
fic was dispiriting. The reason why 48,035 fans braved gloomy skies, gridlock a
nd the Kansas City Royals last night became as clear as an indelible memory whe
n Derek Jeter, the Yankees shortstop, led off the fourth inning against Royals
starter Scott Elarton.
夜晚潮濕(令人憂傷、灰心)，洋基的對手顯得悲哀，假日的車況令人沮喪。理由是：

hree runs, and the fans were up on their feet cheering. It was Jeter the fans c
ame to see, and he would not disappoint them.

iled over the head of Doug Mientkiewicz, allowing Jeter to take second. After a
dramatic pause, the official ruling came down from on high: The official score
r in the press box awarded Jeter a hit and charged Bako with an error. So it wa
s that Jeter became the eighth Yankee to reach 2,000 hits, joining Lou Gehrig,
Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Bernie Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly and Yogi
Berra.

and applauded Jeter. From their vantage point, his accomplishment looked less
like a milestone than a stepping stone toward what is considered perhaps his ul
timate destiny: becoming the first player wearing Yankee pinstripes to reach 3,
000 hits.

Torre noted how rare Jeter's humility is in baseball.
