Like anybody who has spent 10 Major League seasons wearing a chest
protector, shin guards and a mask, Jorge Posada has assembled his
share of bumps and bruises. Sprains and strains, fractures and falls
all come with the territory for catchers.

None of the injuries Posada suffered in his career hurt nearly as
much, though, as what he went through in the winter of 1999. He wasn't
injured then, but the pain he endured hurt more, tugging at his heart
strings.

On Nov. 28, 1999, Jorge Posada Jr. was born. Within a few days, his
parents realized something was terribly wrong with their son.

"As soon as he was born, within four days, we thought there was
something going on," Posada said. "We took him in to be examined."

The diagnosis was frightening. His son had craniosynostosis, a
condition affecting bone structure in the skull. It occurs in three of
10,000 births. Jorge Jr. was one of the three.

His father was devastated by the diagnosis.

"It was a terrible time for me and for my family," the catcher said.
"You don't know what to do, where to turn."

Posada was just emerging as the full-time catcher for the New York
Yankees, taking over a position that had been occupied by some of the
greatest players in this storied franchise's history -- Hall of Famers
like Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra, workhorses like Elston Howard and
Thurman Munson. He was the heir apparent with three years on the team.

"You look back and you think about it," Posada said, shaking his head.

With the Yankees coming off consecutive World Series championships,
the team would not let their catcher down. His teammates formed an
important support network for him and Posada responded with a big year
in 2000, batting a career-best .287 with 28 home runs and 86 RBIs.

"Each day, when I got here to the stadium, the guys really helped me
out," he said. "You think about things, but you still have a job to
do."

Posada became a lynchpin for the modern Yankees dynasty, a productive
hitter and an expert handler of pitchers. He made the All-Star team
four straight years starting in 2000, and hit 30 home runs in 2003,
matching Berra for the most by a Yankees catcher in a single season.
He came into the 2006 season with 512 RBIs over the last six seasons,
nearly 100 more than any other catcher during that period. His 136
homers as a catcher over that span trailed only Mike Piazza's 139.

And the Yankees continued to win, stretching their string of playoff
appearances to 11 in a row.

At one month of age, Jorge Jr. went through the first of seven
surgeries he has endured to correct the condition. It was far more
than any child -- or any family -- should have to go through.

No one appreciated that more than his father. In 2000, as his son
began the complicated path to recovery, Posada formed a foundation,
part of the Giving Back Fund's family of charities, to support
families of children who have the same condition as his son.

Jorge Jr. is 6 years old now, full of energy, beginning to figure out
the fact that his father is a mainstay on one of baseball's best
teams. Jorge Jr. faces one more surgery in the next year or so, and
then he should be home free.
小 Jorge 現在六歲大，充滿活力，開始了解他的父親是棒球裡最好的球隊之一
的支柱的事實。小 Jorge 在接下來幾年要面對更多手術，而之後他就能痊癒了。

"It was a burden but it's all good now," Posada said.

And that's why each year, when he hugs his kids on Father's Day, it
carries a little more meaning for the Yankees catcher.
