Cano avoiding a sophomore slump
Young second baseman still learning while producing for Yanks

NEW YORK -- Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano has the uncanny ability to
show his age and also play beyond his years in the same game, sometimes on
consecutive plays.

He can drive the ball out of the park, and has been able to do so since he was
a kid playing in Liga Mercedes in the Dominican Republic, but at his best, he

although the young infielder is a long way from reaching the status earned by

completing his first full season start-to-finish in the big leagues would be
a great start.

offensively and defensively. He plays so relaxed that sometimes we forget he
just had his first full year. You watch him walk around and the way he
handles himself, he looks like he has been in the big leagues for a long time."

If anyone knows Cano, it's Bowa. The two have been virtually inseparable
since Spring Training and at times their relationship feels more father and
son than coach and player. Bowa and Cano joke -- a lot. They also talk
baseball and about life outside of the sport.

family is the most important part of his life -- his father Jose is his role
model -- and he responds well to a strong support system. The Yankees surely
know that fact. After all, Jose signed with the Yankees in 1980 and made his
Major League debut in 1989 with the Astros, pitching in six games. Jose is
currently a "buscon," a scout/baseball agent in the Dominican Republic.

Guerrero. While growing up, Cano starred for Liga Mercedes and later for San
Pedro Apostal High School. He was signed by the Yankees in 2001 and made a
meteoric rise through the Minor Leagues.

This season, the sometimes-flashy Cano is hitting .299 with two home runs and
18 RBIs. He has committed five errors in 216 total chances. Through it all,
he has never lost his smile.

"He's got the perfect demeanor in terms of having fun everyday, because you
