Yankees' 2B goes 3-for-3 in Trenton rehab game

TRENTON, N.J. — Robinson Cano took a step forward on his journey back to
health and to the major leagues with the Yankees' Double-A affiliate, the
Trenton Thunder, on Friday night. Batting second in the batting order and
taking his regular position of second base in the field, Cano seemed to have
little rust to shake off. He went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk and handled
multiple chances in the field without difficulty.

Cano appeared to be relaxed as he took the field in the top of the first. He
was typically animated, pacing, waving his arms, rocking back on his heels and
looking up at the sky, kicking the dirt. That was the extent of his activity in
that frame as no balls were hit to him.

Cano's first at-bat, with one out in the bottom of the first, was distinctly
atypical in that he failed to offer at the first pitch, then let another three
pitches go by for a four pitch walk. Cano's second at-bat, in the second inning
, was more in keeping with his usual style. He swung at the first pitch from
Bowie starter Beau Hale and lined it to shallow left field. Bowie left fielder
Jeff Fiorentino came within inches of making a diving catch but the ball ticked
off the end of his glove and fell safely for a single and an RBI. Cano didn't
have much chance to test his legs on the bases as Trenton first baseman Randy
Ruiz then followed with a fly ball to right field that hit the top of the wall
and bounced out for a home run.

Cano led off the fifth frame and again swung at the first pitch, sending a
humpback liner to center field for another safety. He was forced at second im-
mediately thereafter and didn't appear to experience any difficulty as he slid
into the bag. In the field, he flawlessly handled his first two defensive
chances, going back for a popup to short right off the bat of Leo Daigle and a
soft grounder off the bat of Dustin Yount.

The Yankees' plan for Cano was open-ended. He would play for as long as he felt
up to it.

洋基沒有對他特別規定，看他的感覺如何。

"He could play five innings tonight, he could play seven, he could play the
whole game. It all depends on how he feels," Trenton manager Bill Masse said
before the game. Cano batted in the top of the seventh, and again swung at the
first pitch, lining it to right for a double. He ran to second easily and was
pulled for pinch-runner Grant Plumley.

After the game, Cano said that he felt fine and was ready to go back to New
York. The wait, he said, has been difficult.

"It's been very frustrating when you're watching the game you know they need
you," he said.

Asked about his rare four-pitch walk, Cano threw back his head and laughed.

"I never get those kinds of pitches in the major leagues," he said. "It's a
good start when you've been out for five weeks and you get a walk."

It was a reunion of sorts for Cano and the Thunder. Cano had played at Trenton
in 2003 and 2004 on his way through the Yankees' minor league system. Masse,
who managed Cano at Greensboro in 2002, said he was thrilled to have him back.

"He's still got the same smile and the love to play," Masse said. . "For all
the bad things you hear about baseball, the steroids and the black marks on the
game, Robby Cano is what's good in baseball. He loves to have fun, he's always

Masse spoke of the way Cano is perceived versus reality. "He's just so natural-
ly gifted. Sometimes if you watch him, like today during batting practice, hit
and take ground balls, it's almost as if he doesn't care. Then all of a sudden
he hits six home runs in a row, and it's like, 'If he did care, where would he
hit them, over the river instead of in it?' It's the way he goes about it. He
has that carefree type of attitude, but it's good carefree, it's not bad. It's
not like, 'I don't care.' It's just relaxed, having fun ... I know when he
first went up to the big leagues it was always that thing, that he's too relax-
ed. He has to work harder. He does work hard. He just works hard at his own
pace, which isn't bad. He's a special kid."

Cano will play again on Sunday, and then a determination will be made as to
where he goes next. Perhaps it will be Chicago.

週日會再打一場，然後會決定接下來。可能到芝加哥去(配合洋基作客芝加哥)。
