Yankees go into 2007 with balance

When I view the Yankees' pitching staff as a whole, I see much of the focus
on Randy Johnson — specifically how he'll recover from the back surgery.
He's got 34 wins in his two Yankee seasons, but when you look at the
strikeouts, the innings, and the ERA, they're not there. When you get to the
postseason, it's a matter of domination. The Yankees brought Randy Johnson
here to dominate with his mid-90s fastball and the hard slider, and he hasn't
done it.

A lot came out of last year for Chien-Ming Wang. He's the No. 1 starter and
will only improve. He's going to be so much better off in pressure situations
and the postseason because of his experience, and battling the way he did to
win Game 1 against the Detroit Tigers. I'd put Andy Pettitte second, then
Mike Mussina third, followed by Johnson and then Kei Igawa, giving the
Yankees great balance of lefty-righty.

After Wang, Pettitte is the clear No. 2 man on this staff. I believe he's a
young 34. Last year, he only won 14 games, but his velocity was up and he had
a great second half. And the fact that he's played in New York and won here,
and Torre trusts him leads me to believe he could have a big year. Health is
a concern with any pitcher. If you look at his second-to-last year with the
Yankees (2002), that's when the elbow problems began. He was putting enough
masking tape on the injury to have it get to the point it did in 2004, and
he's bounced back. Being back in New York, pitching in Yankee Stadium, in
front of these fans — there's something to be said for pitching in Yankee
Stadium, especially on a Tuesday night in the middle of the summer when your
opponent is 20 games out and there are 55,000 people screaming — is going to
make a difference.

Unlike Randy Johnson when he came here at age 41, or Mike Mussina, who just
turned 38, this isn't a career-ending deal for Pettitte. I believe he has
plenty left. If he's healthy and can display the stuff he has in the past,
he can be successful. And you'll know Pettitte is healthy based on how crisp
his stuff is. In other words, because of the style of pitcher he is —
pitching inside, relying on breaking bats — he has to be on top of his game.

Every year since Torre's been here, it's not about whether they have enough
to get to the playoffs; it's a matter of who is going to come up with that
seven-inning shutout when they need it most. Time and time again, Andy
Pettitte was that guy. He's a big-game pitcher. They didn't sign him to beat
the Red Sox or get 14 or 16 wins during the regular season; they signed him
for the seven scoreless innings in the playoffs.

If the Yankees are mixing and matching as the July 31 trade deadline
approaches, it'll be because Johnson hasn't shown enough due to his back.

Pettitte's presence pushes Mussina into the background at No. 3, and even at
age 38, he's a better No. 3 than most other teams have. Johnson is fourth
because in all honesty, the Yankees don't know what they're going to get from
him. Will he miss a start here and there because of the back? The way the
rotation is structured, the lower-end guys will be skipped more often,
especially early in the season. Why not put Johnson in a position that if he
has to miss a start, it won't hurt the team as much? This is, of course,
assuming that Johnson will be ready by Opening Day.

With Carl Pavano, the Yankees hope he has a dominant spring as a showcase for
other teams to see he's healthy. From there, Brian Cashman will do what he has
to do. Pavano is an insurance policy, but right now I have to believe that
having not started since June of 2005 doesn't sit well with many people in the
organization.

至於Pavano, 洋基希望他能在春訓時有好的表現讓其他隊伍知道他是健康的. 在那之後,
現金人就會去做他該做的事.(譯按:強運兄也蠻毒的嘛 XD) Pavano是個保險, 但是我相信

Kei Igawa is a mystery for me. Bobby Valentine, whose opinion I value greatly,
said three years ago that Igawa was the best left-hander on the planet at the
time. His velocity fell off a bit last year, but he still threw 200 innings.

宅男對我來說是個問號. 依據我覺得評論蠻中肯的大情人總教練(譯按:千葉羅德海洋隊
總教練)三年前的說法: 宅男是當時地球上最好的左投手.(比不上外星人就是了)
去年他的球速有點下滑, 不過仍然投了200局以上.

What gets me about Igawa is that he's unproven at the major league level.
Aside from Hideo Nomo, there really hasn't been any Japanese pitcher to come
here and dominate. Igawa made 129 starts over the past six years, and there
was talk of burnout due to his workload. There were teams that scouted Kei
Igawa as a frontline starter. The Yankees are asking him to be their fifth
starter. That should take some pressure off him.

讓我有些擔心的是井川還沒證明他能在大聯盟等級中投球. 除了野茂英雄之外, 沒有任
何來到大聯盟的日職先發投手能夠有傑出的表現. 井川過去6年中投了129場球, 有一說

What I like with Igawa — and I don't know how he's going to end up — is his
out-pitch is a changeup. That's the biggest difference between him and Johnson,
who's a fastball-slider guy. Igawa, pitching on the following day, offers a
change of pace. He's also a different style of pitcher than Pettitte, who lives
off the cutter. I like the possibility of him forcing opposing hitters into a
different game plan.

Furthermore, Cashman is in a position where the front-end money (the $26
million bid) doesn't count against the luxury tax or the threshold of the cap.
He's basically got a guy who counts about $4 million against the cap. In
baseball terms, he's a $4.5 million-a-year guy. That's comparable to Arthur
Rhodes. Worst-case scenario: Igawa becomes a solid lefty out of the pen.

The Yankees have some great pitching prospects coming up also. I'm excited to
see Philip Hughes. Internally, some members of the organization were clamoring
to get him up, and Cashman held his ground to keep him at Double-A and be
conservative with his development. I can attest to this, because I went
through it when I came up with the Yankees. Clyde King looked at me and said,
"You're not ready. I wouldn't recommend you making the team here." I had a
fantastic spring here in 1988, but I was reeling. I wasn't ready mentally or
physically. That's why I agree with Cash. You don't rush your blue-chippers.
If Phil Hughes puts together 10 to 12 good starts at Columbus, then Cash and
his staff have a decision to make. I'm interested to see what Hughes would do
at the big-league level and what he'd mean to the rotation.

洋基也有些優秀的投手新秀, 我非常期盼看到Philip Hughes. 在球團內有些人非常積極
的要求將Hughes升上大聯盟, 但現金人堅持他將Hughes留在2A的立場並對Hughes的晉升

Where do Darrell Rasner and Jeff Karstens fit in? They are a couple more able
bodies in Triple-A that could be recalled in an emergency situation. Health
is a question with any pitching staff, but looking at the Yankees, where Randy
Johnson is coming off of back surgery, Mussina has had had groin and elbow
injuries in the past few years, Rasner or Karstens could get their share of
starts.

那麼Darrell Rasner和Jeff Karstens又要安排在什麼位置? 他們可以先放在3A, 有緊急

There are questions about placement of arms in the bullpen, too. Chris Britton,
who the Yankees got from Baltimore in the Jaret Wright deal, has great stuff.
I saw him with the Orioles, and he has a live arm. And Brian Bruney, you saw
the way that Joe Torre started using him late in the year — he was a seventh
or eighth-inning guy who could overpower hitters with his 96-mile-per-hour
fastball and a changeup. Plus, he could pitch on consecutive days, while Kyle
Farnsworth could not. Scott Proctor earned Torre's trust early in the season,
and kept it throughout. With Britton, Bruney and Proctor, Kyle Farnsworth is
expendable. Another factor is Humberto Sanchez, the 23-year-old power arm the
Yankees got from the Tigers in the Gary Sheffield trade. He will likely start
the year as the closer in Columbus and work his way to the major leagues from
there.

The way Torre uses his bullpen, you can't have enough of those types of arms.
Seldom have I ever heard a reliever say, "I can't go today." They'll say they
can get an out when they can barely lift their arms. Three or four power arms
provide depth and give Torre options to rest them and keep them fresh.

以Torre使用牛棚的方式, 有這些人還不能保證夠用.(囧) 我很少聽到一個後援投手會說
"我今天沒辦法上場." 當他們手臂幾乎舉不起來時還是會說可以解決一名打者. 三到四
個有威力的投手可以提供牛棚的深度並且提供Torre選擇以獲得休息和保持正常狀況.

For the first time in a long while, the Yankees were able to hold off and
trade guys like Sheffield and Jaret Wright and get some good, "plus" arms.
They're stockpiling some good young pitchers and they're positioned pretty
well for 2007 and the future.

長時期以來這是第一次洋基能夠不再買進高價球員並且交易掉像Sheffield和Wright等
球員並得到一些好的, "額外" 的年輕投手. 洋基正在囤積這些選手而且會在2007年之
後讓他們有所發揮.

Overall, this is the most balanced staff they've had in a long time, probably
since 2002 or 2003, when they had David Wells, Mussina, El Duque, Roger
Clemens, Pettitte and Jose Contreras. The lefty-righty combination and the
mix of youth and experience make the Yankees' 2007 staff very tough.

總而言之, 這大概是自從2002到2003擁有David Wells, Mussina, El Duque, Roger
Clemens, Pettitte和Jose Contreras的洋基隊以來最均衡的投手陣容. 左投右投,
老將新秀的組合搭配會讓2007年洋基的投手陣容非常難纏.
