Boss of the future praises Cashman

CLEVELAND -- When George Steinbrenner put the focus on Brian Cashman the
other day by saying, "the responsibility is totally in his hands," The Boss
apparently wasn't kidding.
前幾天當老闆老史表示"現金人擔負所有的責任" 顯然他不是說著玩的

Cashman was given full authority over all baseball decisions during his
contract negotiations last October, and, according to Steve Swindal,
Steinbrenner's son-in-law and future successor, Cashman still has the power
as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.
去年十月現金人的合約協商裡 被賦予在棒球方面全然的決策權
根據老史未來的接班人女婿小史表示 在七月三十一日交易截止前

"We work as a team with Brian as the quarterback," Swindal said yesterday
from Tampa, Fla., in a telephone interview. "This doesn't mean that he
doesn't talk to people. He does. He likes to reach a consensus. But at the
end of the day, it's his decision.

About two months have passed since Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield suffered
potentially season-ending injuries, and yet the Yankees have stayed quiet on
the trade front. Cashman has stressed patience, refusing to give up much
heralded Double-A pitcher Phil Hughes for a quick fix.

"What Brian thinks is the best because he has my support," Swindal said.
" ... I concur with him and think we shouldn't overreach or overpay just to
get somebody."

But does Steinbrenner feel that way? He's never been known as the patient
type, as he has personally ordered the acquisition of players, such as in
2002, when the Yankees acquired Raul Mondesi.

"I think he certainly looks to Brian for guidance, but it's not that ... he's
still impatient," Swindal said, laughing. "He wants to win, as we all do. We
all have that attitude. But he recognizes that this strategy is right and he
has bought into it."

If the Yankees were willing to give up Hughes, their 2004 first-round pick,
they could have had Washington's Alfonso Soriano playing leftfield for them.

Or if the Yankees weren't patient, maybe Milwaukee's Carlos Lee, Kansas
City's Reggie Sanders or Philadelphia's Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell would be
in pinstripes.

But the Yankees haven't gone the big-name route - not yet, anyway - and
that's the most telling sign Cashman still rules the Yankee universe.
Surprising, isn't it?

Swindal said the new setup with Cashman atop the chain of command, with
everyone in the Yankees' Tampa wing answering to him, "has gone exceedingly
well."

Cashman doesn't mind the pressure, even though he sees what's taking place on
the field like everyone else. The Yankees need help in the back of the
rotation, in their bullpen and, perhaps most of all, desperately need a
corner outfielder with pop.
現金人並不在意壓力 他就像其他人一樣看到場上發生什麼
洋基在投手輪值上需要幫忙 還有牛棚 也許最渴求有火力的左右外野

Joe Torre, never one to dismiss the importance of pitching, said this week
he'd prefer to acquire another bat to "relieve some of the stress" of having
to produce runs. But Cashman, at least publicly, remains intent on improving
the Yankees' pitching staff first.
老托從來不解除對投手的需求 他這星期曾表示他比較需要有火力可以減輕壓力的選手
但現金人公開傾向先改善洋基的投手

"I'm always looking to upgrade the pitching staff first and foremost,"
Cashman said, "but if I see an opportunity to acquire a bat that could help
us, then I will do that."

Swindal complimented Cashman, Torre and "a team of fighters" for staying in
the race, only three games back of first-place Boston in the American League
East entering last night.

因為他們仍維持競爭 在美聯東區只落後領先的紅襪隊三場勝差

Asked how Steinbrenner has been handling it, Swindal said, "We're all
disappointed but understanding those are things that are out of our control.
You do the best with the cards that are laid out in front of you. I think
we're doing well, staying tight in this race."
被問到老史怎麼看待現在這個狀況 小史說
"我們都很失望 但了解到有些事情不是我們所能控制 我們盡量利用手上的牌
我想我們做得很好 在比賽中跟得很緊"

And with the trade deadline closing in, he's confident that Cashman will make
the right decision of how to go about improving the team.
而交易截止日在即 他有信心現金人對於改善球隊將做出正確的決定

"It's stressful times when you have the unexpected happen, with all these
injuries, but you still have to maintain discipline and patience," Swindal
said. "And that's why we have Brian where he is."
小史說"當不預期的傷兵出現 就會有壓力 但你必須保持住要有耐心
那就是為什麼我們需要Brain在那兒"
