George bides Torre's time Report: Jeter pulls for Joe BY SAM BORDEN and BILL MADDEN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITERS George Steinbrenner George Steinbrenner headed back to Tampa last night to mull over whether Joe Torre will return as Yankees manager next season. Sources told the Daily News over the weekend that Steinbrenner was planning to remove Torre in the wake of the Yanks' humiliating first-round loss to the Tigers, and it appears that is still the most likely scenario. Steinbrenner has been soliciting input from other members of the organization and said, "I have not made up my mind yet," when he was stopped yesterday at the Regency Hotel. His son-in-law, general partner Steve Swindal, is expected in New York today and likely will begin brainstorming with team officials about what changes need to be made this winter. Steinbrenner will be involved via phone. Numerous players and coaches voiced support for Torre in recent days and, according to one source, it's believed that Derek Jeter also may have reached out to The Boss to back his manager. Those words ultimately may not matter, however, since it seems that Steinbrenner's frustration over the Yanks' subpar record in recent postseasons will push him to finally end Torre's 11-year run as Yankee skipper. Lou Piniella is the probable choice to replace him. Torre did not appear at the Stadium again yesterday and GM Brian Cashman did not return phone calls. Typically, Torre makes an address shortly after the season ends and, according to one team official, it's possible he might do so today. That could present an awkward situation if his job status still is in limbo; Torre has refused comment to reporters who have waited for him at his house. Steinbrenner was in the midst of an unusual scene himself yesterday, as he was tracked to his midtown hotel. The Boss had a late lunch in the back room of Feinstein's, which is the restaurant at the Regency, and after enjoying a steak sandwich and fries he sent his luggage out on a cart. When he came through the front door around 3:30 p.m. - eating an apple - he first chastised reporters and then said he hadn't yet determined Torre's fate before hopping in the back of a sedan and driving off to the airport. Several people close to The Boss believe that, while he may not have made a final choice yet, Steinbrenner ultimately will let Torre go. Whether that will be in a traditional firing or a more amicable divorce - perhaps Torre taking another job within the organization to finish out the final year on his contract worth $7 million - has not been determined. Steinbrenner, according to sources, was upset because he did not feel the Yankees had the same intensity for winning that he had this season and often attributes that to Torre's more laid-back attitude. That is why Piniella, who has been hired and fired by Steinbrenner before, and his fiery approach again have appealed to The Boss. To get Piniella, the Yankees would have to act quickly - likely one reason Steinbrenner is expected to come to a decision in the next few days. Piniella, who is working for the Fox network as an analyst on the ALCS, has been in contact with four teams - the Nationals, Cubs, Rangers and Giants - that currently have managerial openings. Several players who did show up at the Stadium yesterday to clean out their lockers - Jaret Wright, Ron Villone and Miguel Cairo - defended Torre and expressed surprise over the abrupt ending to the season. "I mean, he didn't get any at-bats," said Wright, who lasted only 22/3 innings in the Bombers' final game on Saturday. "We did that. We did that and we wish it could have turned out better for him."
