Cashman 'angry' that Pavano didn't tell Yanks about injury

What little integrity Carl Pavano has remaining with the Yankees was further
damaged over the weekend when he admitted to being involved in a traffic
accident in Florida earlier his month.
An examination conducted yesterday revealed Pavano suffered two fractured
ribs in the accident. Yet he pitched in a minor-league game later that day.
"It's obviously frustrating, disappointing. There are a lot of words that
would come to mind. ... Of course I am angry," said general manager Brian
Cashman, who did little to hide his annoyance with the right-hander during a
conference call with reporters.
Cashman did not learn of the accident until late Saturday night, when Pavano
revealed a car he was driving spun out of control on wet pavement on the
morning of Aug. 15 in West Palm Beach and struck another vehicle stopped at
an intersection.
Police investigated the accident, but Pavano claimed he was not cited. With
Tropical Storm Ernesto approaching, Palm Beach County was under a state of
emergency last night, and a report could not be obtained from West Palm Beach
police.
Pavano could face a fine or suspension from the Yankees.
"I am still in the process of gathering all the information possible. So it
would be premature of me to say anything," Cashman said.
"I don't want people holding back information. I have an army of (medical)
people here that we provide to put our players in the best position possible
to succeed. I don't want anybody to sabotage that by holding back. Clearly
here for a period of time, that took place."
The incident is the latest in a series of mishaps that have befallen Pavano
since he signed a four-year, $39.95 million deal with the Yankees before the
2005 season.
Pavano has not pitched for the Yankees since June 27, 2005. In the 14 months
since, he has complained about a sore shoulder, a bad back, bruised buttocks
and a sore elbow. Now comes this latest issue.
The only surgery Pavano had came on May 25 when a single bone chip was
removed from his elbow. His desire to pitch has been questioned by teammates
and fans.
"It just seems like there's a lot of distractions that are caused by me that
go around with the team, and I figured that, at the time, it was something I
could get through," said Pavano, who contends he hopes to rejoin the team
this season.
Pavano will be further examined today to check for other injuries. He is
scheduled to pitch for Class AAA Columbus tomorrow in Durham, N.C. Barring
another setback, he could join the Yankees when rosters expand on Friday.
"I don't believe he's trying to not pitch for us," Cashman said. "He's not
purposely getting into car accidents or holding things off. But I think at
the end of the day, it's just not a good situation. It's time for us to get
something out of this thing."
Pavano pitched four innings for Class A Tampa the same day as the accident
and on Friday threw six solid innings for Columbus.
That increased speculation Pavano would soon be promoted to the majors. Only
then did he complain about the discomfort in his rib cage. He admitted to the
accident later that night.
"It just didn't seem to get better," he said. "That was the only reason I
went to the team."
Pavano suggested this latest injury could keep him off the mound.
"I don't feel that it's going to be something that is going to hold me back.
But if I feel it's going to be something that's going to jeopardize my arm or
the team winning, losing; obviously those are things I have to take into
account," he said.
Even if Pavano were healthy enough to pitch, his reticence has become a
running joke with teammates.
"The clubhouse area is a completely different area," Cashman said.
"We'll have to fill that in as we go."
Said Pavano: "If some people don't understand, I don't think I have much
control over that. Me talking to them or trying to save face — that's not
the type of guy I am. I'm going to go about my business. ... I'm not going to
really worry about it too much."
Standard contract language compels every player to inform the team of any
injuries. But it is unlikely this breach is serious enough for the Yankees
to try to invalidate Pavano's contract.
