Melky Cabrera, Terrence Long, Scott Erickson, Matt Smith, Kevin
Thompson and Darrell Rasner.
Had I told you on Opening Day that each of these players would be on
the roster at the same time before September, you probably would have
thought that the Yankees were in for a long season.

But here we are on June 5, and all of the aforementioned players are
currently wearing pinstripes.

Despite the injuries that landed Hideki Matsui, Gary Sheffield, Shawn
Chacon, Carl Pavano, Bubba Crosby and Tanyon Sturtze on the disabled
list, and even with the minor maladies that have sidelined Alex
Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi and Mariano Rivera
over the past week or two, the Yankees find themselves entering the
four-game showdown with the Red Sox just a half-game out of first
place.

replacement until Crosby returns?

That's a tough call at the moment. My inclination is that Thompson's
stay in New York will last as long as it takes Crosby to get his
hamstring back in shape, which should be another 7-10 days. But
Thompson has a chance to extend his stay by making the most of
whatever at-bats he gets while he's in the Majors.

I think that is definitely a possibility, Mike. Cabrera has
demonstrated the ability to play all three outfield spots, and his bat
has certainly been anything but a liability. If he can continue to get
better and mature offensively, I could see the Yankees giving him a
shot at the starting job in right field next season. He seems to have
a good enough arm for that spot.

about him getting hurt, that's exactly what happened.

Unless Sheffield's torn ligament heals faster than expected, this
latest wrist ailment will, in all likelihood, result in surgery before

hard to believe that the team would pick up his $13 million option.
You never know, but it seems like a lot of money for a player coming
off surgery. It will certainly be something to monitor in the coming
months.

Isn't it great that people can watch the same games and come up with
such different views?

Wright has pitched well of late, allowing three runs or fewer in each
of his past six starts. If there's one knock against him right now,
it's that he hasn't pitched more than six innings in any start, but if
he can give the Yankees six innings of three-run ball every time out,
they'll take that in a second.

Dotel continues to rehab in Tampa in extended Spring Training games,
but his rehab assignment should be getting under way any day. Once
Dotel pitches two or three weeks of rehab games, he should be ready to
join the Yankees, possibly before the end of the month.

Dotel's presence would be big for the Yankees, giving Torre another
