Bio:
Returns for 3rd season as Frank Robinson's bench coach, his 2nd in
Washington...works closely with Robinson on daily schedules, statistical
analysis, lineups and game management...was named Expos' bench coach on
January 23, 2004...replaced Brad Mills, who left to become Terry Francona's
bench coach in BOS...coaching career has been highlighted by 2 events: a
World Series title (with ARI in 2001) and an improbable Gold Medal victory
(2000)...has distinction of working on coaching staffs of both MLB clubs in
Canada (TOR 1989-99, MON 2004).
Coaching Career:
Was with franchise as it closed down operation in Montreal (2004) and
relocated to Washington (2005)...is 2nd-longest tenured coach on the
Nationals (Randy St. Claire)...was a 3-year member (2001-03) of ARI's
coaching staff, the final 2 as 3B coach...was the 1B coach on ARI's 2001
World Championship club that claimed the Fall Classic in 7 games over
NYY...greeted Luis Gonzalez at first base after his game-winning RBI single
off Mariano Rivera in the 9th inning of Game 7...worked for Frank Robinson in
Panama as the 3B coach for Team USA's '03 Olympic Qualifying club in the fall
of 2003...was stationed in 3B coaching box for the 2000 Gold Medal-winning
Team USA club, managed by Tommy Lasorda...pitching staff included Jon
Rauch...was working as a minor-league manager for TOR at the time of the 2000
Olympic Games in Sydney...took a late-July leave of absence from his
managerial role with Queens of the short-season Single-A NY-Penn League to
travel to Australia to handle the Olympic coaching chores...joined Team USA
at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego for workouts before making the trek
down-under where Team USA went 7-1 and claimed Gold with a 4-0 win over Cuba
in the finals...was TOR's 3B base in 1998-99...prior to arriving in TOR,
spent 15 years in the Angels organization...began coaching career with Peoria
of the Single-A Midwest League in 1983...he was twice employed as a
player/coach, doing double-duty with Waterbury of the Single-A Eastern League
in 1984 (64 games) and appearing in 9 games during a coaching stint with Quad
Cities of the Single-A Midwest League in 1986...managed in CAL's system from
1986-89...was tabbed as the CAL's minor-league roving defense coordinator
from 1991-93...completed stint with the Angels' chain as field coordinator
from 1994-97.
Playing Career:
Played in the minor leagues for 6 seasons after being drafted and signed by
BAL following the January draft...a slick-fielding SS, he reported to
Bluefield in June...Cal Ripken also made his first minor league appearance at
Bluefield, so became 2B...hit a professional-high .289 with the Appy League
O's in '78...was promoted to his home town of Miami in 1979-80 before being
traded to CAL...was assigned by CAL to Redwood City of the California
League...in '81, was assigned to Holyoke in the Eastern League, but was
offered a coaching position at the end of the season.
Personal:
Eddie and wife Mavelin have one son, Joshua (born February 14, 1988) and live
in Phoenix...is a 1977 graduate of Miami (FL) Senior High...attended Miami
Dade South Junior College...was selected by MIN in the 1977 First-Year Player
Draft, but chose not to sign...was then selected by BAL in the first round of
the secondary phase.
