Bio:
Returns for 4th season as Nationals pitching coach...was named Expos pitching
coach on December 4, 2002...replaced Dick Pole...since arrival, has helped
put the career of Livan Hernandezback on track, and cultivated the talents of
Luis Ayala, Gary Majewski, John Patterson and Chad Cordero...the entire back
end of the Nationals 2005 bullpen was tabbed to participate in the inaugural
World Baseball Classic (Cordero and Majewski with Team USA, Ayala with
Mexico).
Coaching Career:
Began to cement status as one of MLBs top pitching practitioners in
2005...battled attrition, as 25 pitchers toed the rubber for Washington (15
starters)...staff helped the club go 81-81, thus winning 14 more games than
the season prior...the 14-game improvement matched MIL for the 3rd-largest in
MLB in 2005, as only ARI (+26) and CWS (+16) fared better compared to
2004...Washingtons 2.95 bullpen ERA (75 ER/229.0 IP) after the All-Star break
paced the NL among bullpens (at 2.71, only CLE was better in the AL)...for
3rd straight season, Livan Hernandez led the NL in innings with 246.1...John
Patterson posted his long-awaited break-out season, going 9-7 with a 3.13 ERA
in 31 starts.
Followed up superb debut with more positive results in 2004...staff performed
at high level despite significant injuries to 4 of 5 starting pitchers (Tony
Armas Jr., Zach Day, Tomo Ohka and John Patterson)...despite tough luck and
the employment of 22 pitchers (12 starters), Expos posted a 4.33 team
ERA...broke in 4 rookie pitchers (Chad Bentz, Shawn Hill, Joe Horgan and Gary
Majewski)...Hernandez led MLB in innings (255.0) and tied for the lead in
starts (35)...Chad Corderos 14 saves established a new franchise rookie
record...in 2003 debut as pitching coach, staff performed at a high level
despite employing 25 different pitchers...lost 4 projected starting pitchers
to injury for extended periods, including Orlando Hernandez (did not pitch in
2003) and Tony Armas Jr. (made only 5 starts)...St. Claires starting staff
ranked 4th in MLB3rd in the NLwith a 3.82 ERA...his starters also led the NL
with 15 complete games (only OAK, with 16, recorded more in MLB)...helped
Livan Hernandez, who accounted for 8 of Montreals aforementioned 15 complete
games, regain top form...acquired late in Spring Training, Hernandez led the
Expos in wins, innings, complete games, and ERA among pitchers making 20 or
more starts...in the bullpen, St. Claires nurtured the development of Rocky
Biddle (team-high 34 saves)...St. Claires staff also walked the fewest
batters (463) in the National League.
St. Claire made his big league pitching coach debut in 2003 after seven
seasons in the minor leagues, including 5 years in the Expos chain...advanced
as far as Triple-A Ottawa in 2002...signed on to be TORs Triple-A pitching
coach for 2003 before getting the call from the Expos to join their big
league staff...began coaching career with the Brewers Single-A Stockton entry
from 1996-97...joined the Expos organization in 1998 as Single-A Cape Fears
pitching coach...became the 10th former Expo to return to the organization as
a coach...the first 9: Brad Mills, Bob Natal, Claude Raymond, Pete Mackanin,
Joe Kerrigan, Jerry Manuel, Felipe Alou, Ken Macha and Bob Gebhard.
Playing Career:
Right-handed reliever...in 9 big league seasons, went 12-6 with 9 saves and a
4.14 ERA (116 ER/252.0 IP)...was signed as a free agent by the Expos, Sept.
9, 1978... made big league debut with Montreal on September 11, 1984 at
PIT...notched first major league win at SFG on June 3, 1986 (thanks in part
to bunt single in the 15th)...recorded a career-high 7 saves for Montreal in
e87...traded to CIN with C Jeff Reed and OF Herm Winningham in exchange for
OF Tracy Jones and RHP Pat Pacillo, July 13, 1988...with ATL in 1991, took
Armando Reynosofs place on the post-season roster the day before the
NLCS...didnft pitch in the NLCS vs. PIT, but pitched 1.0 inning in Game 5 of
the World Series against MIN.
Personal:
Randy and his wife Liz have two daughters: Monique (born June 9, 1984) and
Chantal (born September 18, 1986)...son late big league-catcher Ebba St.
Claire...Ebba hit .249 with 7 homers and 40 RBI in 164 big league games with
MIL and NYG from 1951-54...brother, Steve, played was a minor league OF in
the Montreal organization.
