Named Nationals 1B coach on January 12, 2006...will also lend experience to
Nationals baserunning efforts...brings 20 years of professional playing
experience (16 in the big leagues), 15 years of coaching experience and 3
seasons of managerial experience to the Nationals dugout...is in his 39th
professional season...drafted by the LAD in the 2nd round of the secondary
phase of the 68 January Draft, played in the big leagues from 1972-87 and
began his coaching career in 88...ranks 7th all-time in stolen-base
percentage (557 of 671, 83%) among those with a minimum of 200 swipes.
Coaching Career:
Spent 8 of the past 11 years as a member of Bruce Bochys coaching staff in
San Diego...was member of SDPs 1998 NL Championship club...in between SDP
stints, managed MIL for two-plus seasons (2000-02)...compiled a 144-195
record (.425) in 340 games at the helm of the Brew Crew...prior to MIL,
enjoyed his first stint with the Friars from 1995-99...retired as a player in
1987, and began his coaching career with TEX in 1988, serving as both dugout
and 1B coach through 1991...from 1992-94, Lopes served as 1B coach for a BAL
club whose Assistant GM was Frank Robinson....managed the Sun Cities Solar
Sox of the Arizona Fall League following the 1996 season.
Playing Career:
Hit .263 with 155 homers, 614 RBI and 557 stolen bags during a 16-year big
league career spent with LAD (1972-81), OAK(82-84), CHI (84-86) and HOU
(86-87)...played in 4 straight All-Star Games (78-81) and was MLBs top
vote-getter in 80...won the NL Rawlings Gold Glove Award at 2B in 78...spent
9 seasons with LAD (1972-81), and ranks 2nd in club history with 413 stolen
bases (Maury Wills, 490)...led the NL with 77 stolen bases in 75 and again
with 63 in 76...in 75, established a (then) big league record by stealing 38
consecutive bases without being caught (STLs Vince Coleman broke mark in
89)...tallied 6 homers, 22 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 50 post-season
games...played in one Division Series (81), 6 LCS and 4 World Series (1974,
77, 78 and 81)...member of LADs World Championship club in 81.
Personal:
David Earl (Davey) Lopes...makes his off-season home in Point Loma,
CA...graduated from Washburn (KS) University in 1969 after earning NAIA
All-American honors in both baseball and basketball...was All-State in both
sports at La-Salle Academy in native Providence, RI...taught elementary
education before returning to baseball...wore No. 42 as a Padres coach in
honor of Jackie Robinson, who also played second base for the
Dodgers...switched to No. 30 when Robinsons number was retired by MLB in
1997...dons No. 5 with the Nationals.
