Halfway through last season it looked as if Ajax forward Jari Litmanen's
days were over. The Amsterdammers were seriously considering dumping
their injury prone Fin. However, during the close of last season the
Finnish international was once again fit and proved his worth with
impressive Dutch league and Champion League performances.
Litmanen's end of season display earned the Finnish international a
contract extension and with the capture of Ajax captain Cristian Chivu
by Roma. Litmanen has now been awarded Ajax's captain badge. Holland's
most talented player Rafael van der Vaart has been appointed as Ajax's
reserve captain. Trainer Ronald Koeman explained his decision. "Without
being unfair to our other players, both Litmanen and Van der Vaart bring
that little extra to the group, both on and off the field. I also made
Chivu Ajax captain at a young age and I do believe that this helped in
developing him in to a more mature player"
