URL:http://tinyurl.com/yuflm Struggling for Kidd restraint BY GREG LOGAN STAFF WRITER April 21, 2004 Until you're one-on-one with Jason Kidd, you just don't understand why it's so difficult to prevent him from pushing the Nets' offense to warp speed. The Knicks have tried for three seasons, losing 14 of 16 games to the Nets after last night's 99-81 Game 2 loss in the first-round playoff series at Continental Airlines Arena. Rather than match point guard against point guard, the Knicks started Shandon Anderson against Kidd in Game 1 and put Stephon Marbury on shooting guard Kerry Kittles. Anderson is the Knicks' best man-to-man defender, but guarding Kidd is more than a one-man job. "He's one of the few guys that can dribble the ball and actually see the entire court at the same time," Anderson said before Game 2. "There's times he's coming up the court, and he may just make a one-handed pass ...A couple times, I caught myself playing with my hands down, and that gave him a chance to pass the ball straight by my head." Anderson shifted to small forward last night to replace injured Tim Thomas and had to cover Richard Jefferson, who receives many of Kidd's passes on the fast break. Penny Hardaway, who also covered Kidd in Game 1, was assigned to him last night. Kidd had 15 points and eight assists as the Nets took a 2-0 lead in the series. One of the big problems for the Knicks is switching from offense to defense when the Nets get a rebound and finding Kidd before he's gone. "It's tough," Hardaway said. "If you drive to the basket, he's out here at the three-point line ready to receive the ball and go. You have to lay the ball up and make sure somebody covers your back and then get back. "You can't guard him in those situations. You have to have someone else slow him down until you get back. The biggest thing is having somebody there waiting on him when he gets that ball so he can't get a full head of steam going." The size of Hardaway, 6-7, and Anderson, 6-6, helps against Kidd because it prevents him from posting up in the half-court offense and allows the Knicks to get by without double-teaming him. In fact, it's better not to double-team because the moment a defender leaves his man to help, a Kidd pass arrives for a layup. Part of good defense against Kidd also is related to executing the offense. Turnovers create fast breaks and so do poor shots. "You can take good shots in your offense, and the floor is balanced," Hardaway said. "Everybody knows when the shot's going to go up. It's the element of surprise where you come down and we're on a mini-fast break but we don't have anything. Then, all of a sudden, someone shoots it. Then, they get out on the fast break. That's what really hurts you." Even when Kidd doesn't have the ball, he hurts opponents because his passing sets the tone for the Nets, such as the time in Game 1 when forward Rodney Rogers threw an alley-oop pass to Kenyon Martin for a dunk. "When you get a guy who's passing and everybody else feeds off him, the entire team does a good job of passing the ball," Anderson said. "Like Rodney Rogers throwing the alley-oop to Kenyon Martin. When did Rodney Rogers ever throw and alley-oop? It's just contagious."
