Nets Hold Media Day
East Rutherford, NJ (Oct. 4, 2004) -
The New Jersey Nets held their annual "Media Day" today with all players
on the roster reporting. Tuesday, October 5, marks the first official day
of training camp for coach Lawrence Frank and his squad.
Jason Kidd was one of the players who spoke with the media. The first topic
of conversation was how Kidd was recovering from his knee surgery, which was
performed over the summer.
"My knee feels great," said Kidd. "My doctor says that things are going well
and my rehab is going extremely well. So to this point, we're all on track."
Alonzo Mourning made an appearance as well and spoke about his recovery from
a kidney transplant.
"The doctors have cleared me and said there is no risk, so I"m going to do my
best to get in shape and try and help this team win some games," said Mourning.
There were several new faces reporting, including newly signed point guard
Travis Best, whom the Nets signed earlier in the day.
Frank and his coaching staff have a lot of work cut out for them. There are
three open starter positions: point guard, shooting guard and power forward.
Kidd won't be ready to play at the start of the season, so Frank will have to
decide who gets the starting nod at the point. With the departure of Kerry
Kittles (shooting guard) and Kenyon Martin (power forward), those positions
are currently vacant as well.
Newly signed Travis Best, Jacque Vaughn, Eric Williams and Ron Mercer, are
just a few of the players who will be auditioning for those starting roles.
Coach Frank mentioned that one positive is that this team has versatility.
"On our roster at least four guys can play at least two positions," said
Frank. "Mercer and Buford can play a couple of positions. Richard [Jefferson]
and Eric Williams can play both the three and the four. Jason Collins can
play the four and the five. So we have some versatility."
With a team full of new faces, no one can predict how the Nets will do this
season. True, it's not the same team that went to the NBA Finals two years in
a row or won the Atlantic Division three consecutive seasons. However, it's
too early to guess how good, or bad, they will be.
That's why they call it training camp. It's a time to evaluate your talent and
start making the most of what you have.
