Pickup of the Week: Nenad Krstic

Back in June of 2002, the Nets gambled a first-round pick on a 18-year-old
Yugoslavian big man named Nenad Krstic. Over the next two years,
that youngster continued to spend his time in Europe, playing for Partizan
 Belgrade, his country's best team.

In June of 2004, casual Nets' fans probably could not have told you who the
 team drafted back two years earlier. And if they could, chances are those
fans could neither spell nor pronounce the draft pick's name.
(It's "Nen-odd Kris-tich," by the way.)

However, following the Vince Carter trade, Krstic started his first NBA game
 on December 21, and the 21-year-old had a memorable debut for three reasons.
 One, the Nets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 94-91 win over the
Bobcats. Two, Krstic recorded his first career double-double with 13 points
 and 12 rebounds. Three, referees ejected the big man midway through the
third quarter when he elbowed Gerald Wallace in the face.

"I think he's going to be a great player," teammate Richard Jefferson told
the New York Daily News after the game. "Given time, he's going to be an

 to get ahead of ourselves, but once he gets experience, he will probably be
 something that we haven't had here before."

Jefferson has recently played with big men like Kenyon Martin and
Alonzo Mourning, so while the last part of his comment may be a bit
hyperbolic, it's certainly worth re-reading and a reason why we're also
high on Krstic.

Jason Kidd also said, "This is a young kid who just wants to get better.

The 28 minutes, 13 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks that Krstic posted
that night jumped out at fantasy basketball owners, and Nenad followed up
that performance by playing 33 minutes and posting eight points, eight
rebounds, and two blocks on December 23.

With the Nets dealing away Mourning, Aaron Williams, and Eric Williams in
the Carter deal, they left themselves with only Krstic, Jason Collins,
Brian Scalabrine, Jabari Smith, and Kaniel Daniels to occupy the power
forward and center roles. Looking at those names, it's little wonder why
head coach Lawrence Frank wouldn't hesitate to give Krstic 30
minutes-per-night, at least on a trial basis.

So far the kid has looked in his two starts, and there's no reason to believe
the experiment will stop. Between Carter, Jefferson, and Kidd, the Nets have
plenty of offensive firepower around the perimeter, but they are going to need
 at least some token inside scoring. Thus, we expect Nenad to continue
getting his seven-to-nine shots per night even when Vince takes the floor,
and the big man has proven to be a willing rebounder and able shot-blocker.

Krstic is not about to challenge Emeka Okafor and Dwight Howard for the Rookie
 of the Year crown, but fantasy owners who pick up Krstic can reasonably
expect averages of 10-11 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Those numbers
 might be even better if, as Jefferson suggests, Krstic's real potential starts
 shining through.

Because Nenad qualifies at center in fantasy circles, those possible averages
become useful in most leagues. Those numbers compare pretty well to centers
like Raef LaFrentz, Erick Dampier, Chris Mihm, Rasheed Wallace, Mark Blount,
and Primoz Brezec – many, if not all, of whom are used in the majority of
fantasy leagues.
