Ashley may have to pay £10m in player bonuses

Bewildered Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley will have to stump up
around £10m in players' bonuses – if he is still in control of the Magpies
on June 30.
Ashley's cash is hardly burning a hole in his pocket at the moment – a
fact underlined by his reluctance to appoint Alan Shearer at St James's Park,
with the club's uncertain future cited as the reason by managing director
Derek Llambias.
The decision to leave the black-and-whites managerless has handed the
rest of Newcastle's Championship counterparts a head start and significant
advantage in the race for promotion next term.
But with Ashley desperate to sell up, the purse strings have been
tightened, culminating in his decision not to hand Big Al the job and axe 120
administrative staff at St James's.
However, with end-of-season player bonuses due to be paid out at the end
of this month, billionaire Ashley will have no choice but to part with a
chunk of his fortune.
It is also understood that United have to pay the latest instalments on
Damien Duff's transfer dating back from his arrival in 2006 and Obafemi
Martins' £10m move from Inter Milan.
Another instalment on the Martins deal is due in 2010.
Those bonuses are all part of the current squad of players' contracts,
and that includes departing stars such as Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and
Brazilian failure Cacapa.
That list also features stars who have a bleak future at St James's as
well, with the likes of Joey Barton and Geremi still on lucrative contracts.
The Chronicle understands that stars like Owen and Viduka have delayed
announcements on their future and that the usual transfer scramble won't get
under way until July 1, when players become free agents and spark off the
knock-on effect in world football.
A United insider told the Chronicle: "The majority of the Toon players
are on holiday at the moment.
"They aren't due to return back for pre-season training until July 1, but
it's a well-known fact they are due to pick up end-of-season bonuses at the
end of the month.”
Meanwhile, Barton was spotted at the Royal Enclosure at Ascot yesterday.
Donning a top hat and tails, the Scouser steered clear of the bar and
stayed out of trouble.
Owen was also spotted in the Betfair sponsors lounge. The out-of-favour
England star has yet to find a club.
