MY duties at St James’s Park involve going around the lounges after home
games, talking to the supporters and the sponsors and attempting to answer
their questions.
John Beresford does it with me. We both love it, although after last
weekend’s 3-0 defeat against Liverpool, Bez said to me ‘I could do without
this, Pedro’. I’m pleased to report it wasn’t as bad as he expected.
The supporters were frustrated and disappointed, but there were still
smiles on their faces. Someone said ‘At least Sunderland are losing’. It
was 2-1 to Everton at the time. It ended 7-1.
Once that scoreline came in, people were laughing and joking again and
saying ‘It could be worse’. Humour is so important to football supporters.
The game at Goodison gave Newcastle’s fans something else to think about,
although it didn’t last.
I understand their feelings. You never want to see your team lose, but
Newcastle have gone down 4-1 to Portsmouth and 3-0 to Liverpool in successive
home games. That just isn’t good enough at a club like this.
It is perhaps inevitable that Sam Allardyce has shouldered the blame,
although the criticism that he has taken has been disproportionate.
The buck stops with the manager and Sam understands that. But he has come
in for some harsh treatment. To be discussing Sam’s future after just 15
games in charge is ludicrous, but that’s football these days.
I have no doubts Sam is the right man for the job and I’m sure he’ll get
it right. But he’ll need time in order to succeed. He’s said that all along.
Sam’s a good manager, he has proved that, but he isn’t a miracle worker.
I remember Chris Mort, the chairman, saying that there could be no quick fix
during the summer. I agreed then and I still do because the disruption has

This ought to be a free season for Sam, a time for him to assess and to
evaluate, and to determine what needs to be done. It’s much too soon for
people to be judging him. I’d rather be patient and look at things this time
next year.
It’s sad, but patience and the Premier League don’t go together. It’s
not even December yet six top-flight managers have lost their jobs. I find
that quite frightening. It isn’t always the answer. Changing your manager
doesn’t guarantee success.
I hope the trend can be bucked at Newcastle. It has to be. Managers here
haven’t been given time in recent years – look at Glenn (Roeder), Graeme
Souness, Ruud Gullit and (Kenny) Dalglish.
It can’t be a coincidence this club has been at its most successful in
recent years when the manager has had a decent crack at it. Sir Bobby
(Robson) and Kevin (Keegan) both had decent spells, and both did great jobs.
When you change your manager on a regular basis, it can cause problems.
Time is so important, but it’s becoming rare in the modern game. Sir Alex
Ferguson is perhaps the best example. He came close to losing his job. Had
he done so, Manchester United might not be the club it is nowadays. Sir Alex
had time. Sam needs the same.
I hope he gets it. I’m sure that he will because Chris appears to be an
astute chairman. He should listen to people in football. They’ll tell him
that Sam’s the man. I’ve got no doubts about that.
Sam’s popular in footballing circles, people in the game understand his
qualities, people in the game rate him. That goes for Newcastle’s players,
despite Saturday’s result. Those players love working under Sam because he
has such great enthusiasm.
Those players have let Sam down, but I’m sure they’ll make it up to him.
I love Sam’s character and I think that could be an important factor in
recovering from this. He can be aggressive, but he can also have a laugh and
a joke at the appropriate times.
Glenn (Roeder) lost that in the end, he no longer had a laugh and I think
perhaps he became too serious. That can happen to people under pressure but
Sam is different.
I don’t think that it’s all doom and gloom at the training ground and
that’s important. Sam is great at handling people and he’ll do what it
takes. That said, the players will be under no illusions.
I spoke to Kevin Keegan about it this week. I said to him ‘In the main,
it’s about the players’. He said ‘It’s not in the main, Pedro. It’s
about the players. Full stop’.
It’s unfortunate for Sam but the players didn’t perform against
Liverpool. The players have to stand up and be counted. Against Liverpool
eight or nine didn’t perform. That’s unacceptable.
The supporters thought the same, although Sam bore the brunt. He has got
broad shoulders, he’ll take it. But no one likes to be booed. No one.
Believe me, he’ll be as frustrated as anyone. I’d never criticise anyone
for booing. The supporters are entitled to boo, it’s their right and I’d
never question it. But it doesn’t help anyone.
I remember one time at Everton when we were struggling. The Goodison
supporters gave us patience, time and understanding and that was what we
needed.
We weren’t the greatest team, but our spirit was great and people could
see that we’d given everything in all the games. That’s what Newcastle’s
players have to do.
I thought Alan Smith deserved to win the man-of-the-match award at the
weekend because his attitude was fantastic. He knows he can play better but
his determination, his courage, his ceaseless running and his willingness to
put his foot in impressed me. Not enough players did that and that’s the
first thing that has to change.
Do that and people will be more understanding. It isn’t their fault, but
the overseas players perhaps don’t realise what football means to people in
the North-East. Football is their life, people get into debt to go to the
games, it’s no surprise the frustration is so great. I’m sure that will
have been pointed out to them in recent days.
I’m sure we’ll see that at Blackburn this weekend.
The thing that gives me hope is the clamour for tickets for Ewood Park.
More than 5,000 supporters are planning to travel. Considering all that has
happened, it’s an amazing response.
Opinion is divided, some people like Sam, others don’t and in pubs across
Tyneside all week, it will have been a major talking point. Yet whatever
people think, they’ll still support Newcastle United. That’s what makes it
such a great club and I’m sure it will inspire Sam and make him even more
determined to get it right. I have no doubt that he’ll succeed.
