PARKER PLANS TO FOLLOW LAMPARD
Chelsea midfielder Scott Parker has set his sights on emulating Frank Lampard
in winning his battle to secure a long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
Parker made his fourth start in Chelsea's past six games in their Carling Cup
victory at Newcastle, managing to outperform the likes of Nicky Butt and
Jermaine Jenas in the process.
Two of those games have been in the Carling Cup, but that still represents a
major advance from earlier this season, when he looked to be on the sidelines.
Indeed, Parker hopes he has started to win around boss Jose Mourinho with his
hard work and commitment, ensuring that he may stay at Chelsea rather than move
in the January transfer window as some speculated he would have to.
"I don't think the manager knew me or what sort of player I was when he joined
the club," he admitted.
"I felt he didn't have much confidence in me at the beginning. I've had to go
out and give him a reason to have faith in me.
"But I'm really pleased to get a run of games. At Charlton, I was the sort of
player to drive others on and set the tempo for the rest of the lads.
"I like to think I can assert myself in a game and I'm confident enough to do
that at Chelsea."
When Lampard moved from West Ham to Chelsea, many sceptics wondered whether he
would ever justify his 11million price-tag and it certainly took him time to
win over the Stamford Bridge faithful.
Now, however, he is an integral part of the Chelsea side, as well as one of the
crowd's most popular players and an England regular, with his game having
developed onto another plane.
Parker, who moved from Charlton for 10million last season, told the Evening
Standard: "It was difficult for me, but I spoke to Frank Lampard a few times
because he came to Chelsea from West Ham and it was a similar situation to
mine.
"It helps me to look at Frank and see what he has achieved. I feel that I
deserve to be at Chelsea and can do really well."
Lampard, who was a substitute at St James' Park, and Claude Makelele, who was
rested completely, are still likely to return in central midfield for this
weekend's Barclays Premiership tie at Fulham.
However, Mourinho was clearly impressed at how Parker, as well as fellow squad
members Carlo Cudicini and Glen Johnson, had performed against Newcastle.
"This is a performance of a fantastic group, but I have to say that some of the
guys who are not playing so much were magnificent," he said.
"Carlo, Glen Johnson and Scott Parker again gave a fantastic effort, although I
think the experience of John Terry and William Gallas was also behind this
young team.
"The Portuguese guys, Paulo Ferreira and Tiago, gave me the midfield security
that I needed for this game, and later on, the substitutes were crucial for us."
