Chelsea midfielder Scott Parker concedes he could have made his foot injury
worse by playing on against Norwich City.
Parker suffered a broken metatarsal bone during Saturday's 4-0 thrashing of
the Premiership strugglers at Stamford Bridge.
The England international appeared to pick up the injury in an innocuous
incident but opted to carry on, rather than come off.
Having only been on the field a matter of minutes when he suffered the
problem, Parker admits he was anxious to stay on to try to impress
manager Jose Mourinho.
But the former Charlton Athletic ace acknowledges his desire to press his
claims for more regular playing time may have contributed to the severity
of the injury.
"I went to see a specialist on Monday and we thought that it was a stress
fracture but we just think that it was a straight break," Parker told
Chelsea TV.
"I knew straight away, I felt something pop and I think if people can recall,
when I went to the bench after we scored, I said to Mike Banks that I think
I have broken something in my foot but just give me time.
"The boss said to come off.
"I just wanted to carry on because I think everybody knows my situation,
you know, I came on for ten minutes and I really wanted to stay on, trying
to show and impress a bit.
"Maybe I have made it worse but I just wanted to try to stay on. Maybe I'm
a bit stupid but I just wanted to try and impress."
Parker admits he is cursing his luck after starting to force his way into
Mourinho's thinking on a more regular basis, after being on the periphery
during the Portuguese tactician's early days.
He added: "I feel that I earned the trust of the manager and over the last
few weeks I really feel the manager has shown a bit of confidence in me.
"I was probably one injury or one dip in form away from playing and being
part of it and I'm really, really disappointed.
"Obviously I'm going to be missing some big games coming up. The Carling
Cup which, for me, was a big part of my season and which is a big game
against Manchester United.
"I've just got to try and stay strong, have a really good Christmas and
really try and come back fitter and stronger."
