By Tom Adams - Created on 30 Oct 2006 Newcastle United captain Scott Parker has admitted he fears The Magpies are already embroiled in a relegation battle after a poor start to The Premiership season. Saturday's 0-0 draw with bottom club Charlton did little to alleviate the pressure on manager Glenn Roeder as a run of six league games without a win has left the North East side just two points above the drop zone. Newcastle's recent form is in contrast to the productive spell Roeder enjoyed when taking over from Graeme Souness last season, and supporters on Tyneside have been growing restless in recent weeks with chairman Freddy Shepherd bearing the brunt of criticism. Whilst Parker insists that the squad are putting in the requisite effort, the former Charlton man has conceded that the inability to transform performances into points means The Magpies are already looking nervously over their shoulder at the bottom three. "The performances are certainly there but the points aren't," Parker admitted. "It's a bit of a worry but we keep going. "That was the best we have played for a long while and I include last year in that. "If the game had ended up 4-0 everyone would have said 'deservedly so' but that's the way it is going for us at the moment. "Are we in a relegation fight? Yes of course, that is the reality. "We are near the bottom of the table and it isn't looking good. "We could go through the season saying we are playing well and not winning games, but that wouldn't keep us in the league. "We are not going to kid ourselves, we are in the results business." Parker also admitted that the St James' Park outfit are suffering from a lack of strength in attack after the retirement of club hero Alan Shearer at the end of last season. Giuseppe Rossi, Obafemi Martins and Antoine Sibierski were all brought in before the transfer window closed, but the Magpies skipper insists the club are still feeling the absence of their former captain. "Obviously the legend that Alan is, you are going to miss him," Parker added. "But we have the players in the squad who can help with that. "When the transfer window shut we knew we were light in the striker department and it is showing, but that's the hand we have been dealt. We have to get on with it." With the pressure building on Tyneside, Magpies supremo Shepherd has called for a quick improvement in the club's form after being the subject of fans' criticism. "We have a lot of quality in our squad and have spent good money," said Shepherd. "They have to repay our faith by producing the goods. "Our points tally needs to be improved quickly. "It's early days and a couple of wins can still make a massive difference to our position."
