It's time to get tough

Scott Parker has told his Newcastle United team-mates to forget about
qualifying for Europe next season if they do not develop a tougher edge away
from St James's Park.
United's 1-0 defeat at Wigan on Sunday leaves the Magpies seven points
behind sixth-placed Reading with 10 games left to play. And, while nobody as
St James's Park has given up on securing European qualification via the
League, Parker knows they must improve on the road. Glenn Roeder's men have
slipped to defeat in their last two Premiership away games following two
insipid performances against Fulham and Wigan.
經過作客兩連敗後，新堡目前餘下十場比賽，落後第六位的柳丁七分
由於第六名可獲歐協盃參賽資格，所以餘下比賽真是分分必爭
隊長就說了，如果不改善作客表現，就不用想可以參加明年的歐洲賽事。
當然大家都想新堡能夠出現在歐洲賽事 (別忘了新堡是本季歐協盃頭號種子啊 XDDD)
And with trips to Watford, Sheffield United and Reading to come this
season, Newcastle's captain is looking for a steelier edge to their game away
from home comforts.
Newcastle have not lost at home in the League since the season's nadir,
the 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on November 4, but they have managed just
three away wins over the course of the campaign and the second-half
performance at the JJB Stadium at the weekend was as bad as they have
produced all season.

That result was enough for Parker to issue a stark warning about their
prospects of a top-six finish if they do not psyche themselves up for a fight
against the top flight's strugglers.
"We've got a few games like the Wigan one before the end of the season
and we need to make sure we improve," said Parker, one of the few players who
matched the Latics' work ethic on Sunday. "People will look at the fixture
list and think they are easy games because they aren't against so-called top
teams, but they won't be anything of the sort.
"It's these sorts of games which define a season. It's easy to get your-
self up for games against Liverpool and Manchester United, but it's the games
against the likes of Wigan, Watford and Sheffield United which will make or
break your season.

"These teams are scrapping for their lives and you have to stand up and
be counted. It's easy to do that at home, but we need to do it more away from
St James's Park.

"If we're going to have any hope of getting into Europe, we will have to
play a lot better than we did at Wigan. The bottom line is we're going to have
to win away games if we're going to finish in the top six, because we can't
just rely on our excellent home form."
Parker's own form has been disrupted by a series of niggling injuries in
2007, but United's captain still epitomises the sort of spirit and commitment
that is going to be needed if Newcastle are going to make another late run
into the European places.

And that is why the former Chelsea star was so frustrated by the
surrender to a Wigan side who Newcastle - on paper and man for man - should
have been too good for.

"It was a very disappointing game for us at Wigan, although we deserved
to get something out of the game because we had a lot of chances in the first
half," said Parker, who has recovered from the slight hamstring injury which
kept him out of Newcastle's Uefa Cup games against SV Zulte-Waregem.
"We missed a penalty when we should have put the game to bed, but we
didn't play well in the second half and we fell into their trap. We knew what
sort of game it was going to be, we knew it was going to be a difficult game
physically, but we didn't handle the conditions well, especially in the
second half.
"They didn't produce anything that was special but they got their goal and
hung on."
