Duff's stitches leave Kerr running out of time

The self-inflicted wounds in the Republic of Ireland camp run deep but, just
for now, the talk in the Cypriot heat was of the seven stitches inserted into
Damien Duff's left foot rather than the internecine struggle to replace Brian
Kerr as manager. Duff's injury - sustained in the act of scoring his marvellous
goal for Chelsea against Liverpool on Sunday - is not enough to rule him out of
tomorrow's critical World Cup qualification match against Cyprus. It must be
hoped.
