Shola Ameobi wins player of the month award

Shola Ameobi's re-birth as a Premier League player is now official.
For the Newcastle United striker has been named as the clubs Carling
Player of the Month for October, with 43% of the vote.
No other United player got anywhere near this percentage of the votes, and
the 26-year-old striker has been given his reward for the way he has
resurrected his career at St Jamess Park.

The former England Under-21 striker scored against both Manchester City
and Sunderland in October, and won the penalty which sparked off the victory
over West Bromwich Albion at St James.

And he isnt doing badly in November, scoring in Sundays defeat by Fulham
at Craven Cottage.

Ameobi looked to be on the way out in the close season, and there were a
host of Championship clubs ready to give him his chance, including his former
boss Glenn Roeder at Norwich City.

And Roeder told me today: Shola is a Premier League player and he has
shown this in the past month for my old club.

Ameobi has been quick to praise the part played by Joe Kinnear as he has
zoomed from zero to hero in the eyes of some supporters.
The United striker needs a manager who has confidence in him, and neither
Sam Allardyce nor Kevin Keegan seemed to have this.

But Kinnear soon saw things in Ameobi he liked, comparing him with the
fearsome but talented John Fashanu, whom he managed at Wimbledon.
Ameobi said: Joe Kinnear has given me my self-belief back and I hope I
have gone a little way to repaying him and our fans in the past couple of
weeks.
