Roeder: We carried players
By Alex Livie - Created on 14 Apr 2007
Glenn Roeder has admitted 'harsh words were said' at half-time in
Newcastle's defeat at Portsmouth.
The Magpies slipped to a 2-1 defeat, as Benjani and Matthew Taylor netted
for the home side, but it could have been a far worse beating had Pompey taken
the plethora of first-half chances they created.
Admittedly, Newcastle improved after the interval but they only had an
Emre penalty to show for their efforts.
Roeder was disappointed with the first-half display, but felt there was
improvement after the interval.
"On the first-half display, where we were very poor, we could have found
ourselves more than a goal down but on the stroke of half-time we could have
equalised and come in all square," he told Sky Sports.
"But to be honest, we had three or four players we carried in the first
half and it made it particularly difficult for us and Steve Harper had to make
some good saves.
"We were a little fortunate to come in 1-0 down at half-time.
"Harsh words had to be said and a few things had to be sorted out with one
or two individuals, but we made a change and brought a young boy on (Andy
Carroll) and it was an improved Newcastle performance in the second half."
Carroll
Newcastle's hopes of claiming an Intertoto Cup berth were dealt a blow
with the defeat, but Roeder says they will keep fighting.
"It is making it more difficult, but I never give in and while it is
possible we will try and achieve all 12 points," he added.
"But to be honest we needed to win today and by not doing that we have
given ourselves a mountain to climb."
