Butt happy to lead
By Lewis Rutledge - Created on 16 Feb 2007
Nicky Butt has expressed his delight after captaining Newcastle for the
first time in the 3-1 win over Zulte-Waregem.
Butt was given the armband for the Uefa Cup clash in Belgium as regular
skipper Scott Parker was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
And the midfielder, who faced criticism in the early part of his Magpies
career, was happy to lead the side to an important victory.
(Butt真的是苦盡甘來啊...)
He enthused: "I enjoyed being captain of this club. It's a great honour
and something any player would enjoy.
"I have done it for Man United a few times, when Roy Keane and Gary Neville
were out, but it's so pleasing to do it with a win for Newcastle.
"It was a good result away from home. The performance was not the best, but
I think some of that was down to the heavy pitch, which did not help.
"It got a bit sloppy at some stages, but overall we have to be happy. It
was job done for us really."
Butt was cautioned for a foul on Wouter Vandendriessche after just a few
minutes but he felt it was a harsh decision by referee Anton Genov.
"My game is tackling and winning the ball, so after I had been booked, I
had to change my game a bit," he commented.
"I do not think it was a booking. It was a bad decision, but you have to
get on with it."
