And McClaren will be at St James' Park on Sunday to check on Taylor as well
as the other England men on display.
Taylor is still well down in the pecking order as, even with Sol Campbell
having disappeared off the radar, McClaren has the likes of John Terry,
Rio Ferdinand, Jonathan Woodgate and Jamie Carragher to choose from in central
defence.

But in an exclusive interview with the Chronicle, McClaren told me today:
"Obviously I am very much aware of Steven Taylor as he has been an integral
part of our Under-21 side which has qualified for the European championships
finals in Holland in the summer.
"And after seeing him in action in quite a few matches this season I have to
say that I like him a lot.

"The spirit he has is something I want to see from England players.

"Taylor is just 21 and already he is in the mould of John Terry and
Tony Adams, and he is a player I am keeping an eye on for the future."

I am sure the same applies to Taylor's England Under-21 colleague
James Milner and the key to it all is that both are still only 21 and their
time will come.
